A Guide to Waldo Stadium

Waldo Stadium gives Western Michigan football a steep, energetic 30,200-seat home built into the hillside below the university’s Kalamazoo campus. West and north grandstands climb sharply above Stafford-Smith Field, while the towering Seelye Athletic Center closes the east end. A lively student section, the Bronco Marching Band and crisp autumn weather create the kind of compact, loud setting that defines MAC football.

Getting to Waldo Stadium

Western Michigan's main campus sits west of downtown Kalamazoo. Waldo occupies the hillside where West Michigan Avenue meets Stadium Drive, below Read Fieldhouse and the Student Center.

Driving & Parking

  • From Interstate 94
Use U.S. 131 north, exit toward Stadium Drive and follow event signage to Oakland Drive or the west-campus lots. From downtown, Stadium Drive and West Michigan Avenue reach the complex but become congested.
  • Avoid the stadium pinch point
Western recommends avoiding Ring Road and Stadium Drive near Waldo when traffic builds. From the west, Howard Street leads north toward Miller/Lawson lots or south toward Oakland Drive inventory.
  • General parking
Public lots are located off Oakland Drive, Stadium Drive and West Michigan Avenue. The 2025 rate was $15 per vehicle, cashless at entry.
  • Five-hour opening
Tailgate and public lots open five hours before kickoff. Donor Areas 3, 10, 11, 12, 17 and 95 require the appropriate Bronco Athletic Fund pass.
  • Remote choices
Lots 33-35 and 92 surround Miller Auditorium; Lots 63, 64, 70 and 75 surround Lawson Ice Arena. Lot 23 at Arcadia Flats is another shuttle stop.
  • Student Lot 13
Students use Lot 13 and pay the same cashless public rate. Entry is from Ring Road South across from the Recreation Center, not the West Michigan Avenue side.
  • Unavailable lots
Lots 16 and 94 are no longer public football options. Use the current map rather than an older campus diagram.
  • Accessible transport
Marked golf-cart shuttle stops serve guests with mobility needs. Text the published game-day number with the stop letter; do not call it.

Public Transit

  • Football shuttle
Complimentary buses run from Lawson Arena and stop at Lot 23 before dropping across West Michigan Avenue from Waldo. Service continues after the game.
  • Miller/Lawson parking
These lots offer the most predictable park-and-ride strategy when stadium-adjacent inventory is full.
  • Kalamazoo Metro
The regional bus system connects downtown and Western's campus. Ordinary routes are separate from the football shuttle, so confirm Saturday and night schedules.
  • Intercity rail
Amtrak serves the downtown Kalamazoo Transportation Center. Pair it with Metro, a taxi or rideshare; Waldo is not directly beside the station.
  • Campus walking
The approach from central campus is short but hilly. Remote lots can be easier for a guest with mobility limitations when paired with the shuttle.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • Pregame drop
Use the Student Center, a designated open campus road or the Lawson shuttle area rather than Stadium Drive directly in front of Waldo.
  • Bronco Walk conflict
The team walks from the Student Center toward the Bronco statue before kickoff, so avoid that route during the published ceremony.
  • Postgame pickup
Walk uphill into campus or ride the shuttle toward Lawson before requesting. Stadium Drive and West Michigan Avenue are committed to lot release.
  • Confirm elevation and side
“Waldo Stadium” can leave a driver above or below the venue. Send a building, lot and street-side description.

Pregame Festivities

Western's pregame spreads through donor lots around the stadium, Student Lot 13 and the western park-and-ride areas. The five-hour opening creates time for a complete tailgate, while Bronco Walk gathers supporters on the central-campus route before the team descends to Read Fieldhouse.

Tailgating

  • Five-hour window
Tailgating begins when lots open and stops at kickoff. Since October 2025, Western has permitted it again for one hour after the game, but never during play or halftime.
  • One space per vehicle
Tents must stand behind the vehicle and cannot obstruct traffic. RVs may require multiple paid spaces in a designated location.
  • Prohibited setups
Glass, kegs, couches, oversized trucks, large pull-behind grills and amplified systems beyond a small gathering are not allowed.
  • Responsible alcohol
Drinking games and devices that accelerate consumption are prohibited. Authorities may inspect vehicles or equipment and remove disruptive groups.
  • Student Lot 13
The designated undergraduate tailgate brings the loudest pregame atmosphere. Families may prefer the Lawson or Miller areas and shuttle.
  • Service animals only
Other animals are prohibited in the tailgate zone. Clean the footprint and use the provided waste containers.
  • Late-season preparation
Waldo's hillside channels wind and November MACtion can be bitter. Weight canopies, bring permitted layers and keep umbrellas outside the stadium.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • At 1332 West Michigan Avenue, this long-running campus restaurant serves burgers, sandwiches, wings and drinks only a short walk east of Waldo.
  • At 1408 West Michigan Avenue, the namesake college bar offers tavern food and a lively game-day setting near the stadium approach.
  • Shawarma King on Drake
At 1441 South Drake Road, the family-run restaurant serves shawarma, falafel, hummus and other Middle Eastern staples near the west-campus parking side.
  • At 355 East Kalamazoo Avenue downtown, Bell's combines a full restaurant, beer garden, music venue and more than 20 draft choices. It works best before parking or after the shuttle crowds clear.
  • Stadium food trucks
The southwest corner and Gate 1 area host the most distinctive game-day additions, avoiding the need to move a parked car.

Gameday Traditions

  • Bronco Walk
Fans meet the team as it leaves the Student Center and walks to the Bronco statue outside Read Fieldhouse. Recent schedules place it roughly two and a half hours before kickoff.
  • Bronco Marching Band
The band performs its pregame field show shortly before the team entrance and returns at halftime. Enter well before kickoff to see both.
  • Buster Bronco
Western's mascot appears at tailgates and inside Waldo. Brown and gold are the signature colors, with game themes sometimes calling for a coordinated alternate.
  • “Fight, Broncos, Fight!”
The fight song follows scores and major defensive stops. The steep stands keep the band and crowd sound focused on the field.
  • Victory Cannon
Western and Central Michigan play for a brass cannon trophy in the state's defining directional-school rivalry. The game produces Waldo's strongest local demand.
  • Row the Boat legacy
The phrase remains associated with the unbeaten 2016 season even though it followed former coach P.J. Fleck. Celebrate the current program through established Bronco traditions rather than assuming the slogan is still an official campaign.

Monuments & Features

  • Stafford-Smith Field
Named in 2024 for former Bronco David Stafford and his wife, Ronda, the field recognizes a record athletics gift supporting football's future.
  • Bronco statue
The team passes the statue outside Read Fieldhouse during Bronco Walk, making it the natural pregame photo and gathering point.
  • Seelye Athletic Center
The $25 million east-end building contains an indoor field, football operations and suites and reaches eight stories at its highest point.
  • Three-board display
A primary board and two auxiliary screens mounted around the Seelye end create a concentrated east-end presentation.
  • Hillside bowl
The stadium's steep expansion from 15,000 to 30,200 seats gives upper rows a strong tactical view without the horizontal distance of a track.
  • Bill Brown Center
The adjoining alumni football facility extends the venue's coaching, meeting and program-history spaces.

History & Notable Moments

  • Opening (1939)
Waldo debuted on October 7 as the centerpiece of a $250,000 athletics plant and was dedicated for Western's first president.
  • Early home streak (1940-43)
The Broncos won 15 consecutive games at Waldo, still the program's longest home run.
  • Capacity growth (1973-89)
Expansions raised the original 15,000 seats first to 25,000 and then to today's 30,200.
  • Attendance record (2000)
A crowd of 36,361 watched Western defeat Indiana State in the season opener.
  • Seelye Center (2003)
The east-end enclosure delivered the stadium's most substantial modern transformation.
  • College GameDay (2016)
ESPN broadcast from campus before No. 14 Western beat Buffalo 38-0 and completed an unbeaten home season.
  • New field comeback (2025)
Western rallied from 13 points down to beat Toledo 14-13 on the replacement FieldTurf.

Seating & Sections

  • North student sections
Sections N, O, P and R hold Western students. Expect standing, coordinated chants and the highest concentration of in-game energy.
  • Sideline reserved seats
The steep west and south-facing grandstands provide clear football sightlines. Midfield is best for formations; lower rows maximize proximity.
  • Kona Big Wave Party Deck
The group space near the team tunnel has offered a limited all-you-can-eat concession wristband through the third quarter, excluding alcohol.
  • John Gill Club
Above the press box, this premium indoor area includes televisions, hospitality and beverage service with an elevated field view.
  • Seelye suites
East-end suites are credentialed premium products integrated into the athletics center, not ordinary reserved seating.
  • Accessible sections
Wheelchair locations are available in Sections B, CC, EE, F and N with one folding companion chair. Reserve the configuration when purchasing.
  • Chairback rentals
Single-game rentals were available at gates for $10 in 2025. Ordinary bleachers otherwise benefit from an approved cushion without metal, pockets or a seat back.

Concessions

Kalamazoo Concessions operates Waldo's permanent stands, with 2025 additions bringing more variety near Gate 1 and the southwest corner. The venue sells alcohol but has no ATM, so electronic payment is the safe assumption.

  • Fowl Ball Fryers
The Gate 1 truck serves fry buckets, chicken tenders, cheese curds and nonalcoholic drinks.
  • Southwest stand
The newer location beside Schultz's Treat Street Bus sells the Western “Bronco” dog topped with pulled pork, barbecue sauce, onion straws and bacon.
  • Draft beer
Draft service is near Gate 1, supplemented by other approved alcohol points. Obtain a wristband at one of four identification stations before buying.
  • Sales cutoff
Alcohol ends at the start of the fourth quarter and cannot leave the stadium. Outside alcohol is prohibited.
  • Party Deck food
The all-you-can-eat product applies only at the stand nearest the deck, lasts through the third quarter and excludes third-party vendors and alcohol.
  • Timing
Gates open 90 minutes before kickoff. Buy before the band show or early in the first quarter rather than joining halftime lines.

Bag Policy

  • Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags may not exceed 12 by 6 by 12 inches. A logo is permitted on one side if no larger than 4 by 3.4 inches.
  • One small clutch, with or without a strap, may not exceed 4.5 by 6.5 inches. A one-gallon clear freezer bag is also approved.
  • Medical items and a diaper bag accompanying a small child are exceptions after proper gate inspection.
  • Purses, briefcases, duffels, backpacks, cinch bags, mesh bags, camera or binocular cases and oversized or tinted plastic bags are prohibited.
  • One factory-sealed water bottle is permitted. Outside food, open containers, coolers, umbrellas, strollers, tablets, video cameras, tripods and selfie sticks are prohibited.
  • Gates open 90 minutes before kickoff. Waldo has eight entrances, but Gate 1 becomes especially congested; use another valid gate and remember that re-entry is prohibited.
