A Guide to Dix Stadium
Dix Stadium is Kent State football’s straightforward 25,319-seat home east of the university’s main campus. Two sideline stands, an open athletics-district view and a south plaza built around the video board keep the venue simple and close to the action. Nearby field-house tailgates, affordable seating and a no-frills layout give Golden Flashes fans an approachable MAC game day centered on football rather than spectacle.
Getting to Dix Stadium
Kent is in Northeast Ohio between Akron and Cleveland. Dix Stadium stands on Summit Street near the eastern edge of campus, with the paid east and west stadium lots on either sideline and free overflow inventory west of Route 261.
Driving & Parking
- From Interstate 76Use the State Route 43 exit and travel north toward Kent, then turn east on Summit Street. Visitors from the Ohio Turnpike can connect through Streetsboro and Route 43.
- Follow event controlPowder Mill Road closes to Summit Street one hour before kickoff. Cline Road traffic must turn right at Summit, and Summit may close at Cline one to two hours before the game. Obey police rather than a navigation shortcut.
- Stadium lotsThe east and west lots accept permits or game-day payment while space remains. Kent State's current fan guide lists $10 for cars and $20 for RVs or oversized vehicles, cash only.
- Free remote parkingLots along Summit Street west of Route 261 are free, with shuttle buses serving the stadium. This is the best budget choice and the fallback when the east and west lots fill.
- Opening timeStadium lots open three hours before kickoff, and parking is first come, first served. Kent State recommends arriving at least an hour early even without a tailgate.
- Accessible parkingThe map identifies accessible positions and ADA seating access on both sides. Contact the ticket office in advance and use the current map because road closures affect which entrance is practical.
- RV planningThe game-day oversized-vehicle rate does not guarantee an overnight stay or utility connection. Confirm arrival and overnight rules before bringing an RV.
- Postgame exitAccept the lot's assigned direction. Route 261 and Summit must absorb both parked vehicles and returning shuttles, making an immediate cross-campus turn unrealistic.
Public Transit
- Football shuttleKent State provides buses from the free Summit Street lots west of Route 261 to Dix Stadium. The 2025 parking map and game guide are the controlling references for stops.
- Student Center pickupResidence-hall students are encouraged to use the free service, with a convenient pickup in front of the Kent Student Center. Visitors staying near downtown or central campus can also walk toward the announced stop.
- PARTA networkPortage Area Regional Transportation Authority serves Kent and the campus, but ordinary routes vary by day and academic calendar. Use PARTA's live information for the city portion and the event shuttle for the last leg.
- Downtown distanceThe Lefton Esplanade connects downtown to campus, but Dix lies beyond the academic core. Walking the entire route is possible but lengthy.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
- Pregame dropUse a central-campus landmark or the free-lot side of Route 261, then take the shuttle. A driver entering Summit's controlled zone may be forced past the preferred side.
- Avoid GRIT WalkThe team arrival follows the west-side approach, so do not schedule a pickup at the west gate around that ceremony.
- Postgame planRide the shuttle or walk west of Route 261 before requesting a car. Confirm the exact lot or building by message rather than using only the stadium pin.
- Downtown alternativeA pickup near the Student Center or downtown Kent can pair more easily with a postgame meal and avoids the first stadium-lot traffic release.
Pregame Festivities
Dix Stadium's public pregame begins when the lots open three hours before kickoff. The west-side Flash Nation gathering and game-specific food trucks, music and activities lead into GRIT Walk, while student and donor functions may operate in separate tents or hospitality areas.
Tailgating
- Three-hour windowSet up only after lots officially open. The compact window rewards a ready-to-unload plan rather than an elaborate build.
- One-space footprintTailgate equipment cannot occupy empty parking stalls or interfere with travel lanes. The permit holder is responsible for the gathering and guests.
- Grill ruleKent State's current guide encourages charcoal grilling and provides marked red containers for used coals. Propane tanks, glass and kegs are prohibited in stadium lots.
- Flash Nation atmosphereMajor Saturday games can add a DJ, sponsor games and local food trucks near the west entrance. Entertainment changes by matchup, so check the week's “Know Before You Go” announcement.
- Weather effectGrass overflow behind the south end can close in wet conditions. Paid-lot credentials do not guarantee space once a lot is full, making early arrival especially important for Homecoming.
- Alcohol responsibilityOhio law and university policy apply, with police and liquor-control enforcement in the lots. Outside alcohol cannot be carried through the stadium gates.
Pregame Bars & Restaurants
- At 135 Franklin Avenue, Ray's has served Kent since 1937. The downtown institution offers burgers—including its oversized Mo-Fo—wings, sandwiches and a deep beer list.
- At 123 Franklin Avenue, this compact local favorite serves hefty baked burritos, tacos and meat-free options. Expect a wait during the lunch rush.
- At 132 South Water Street, the college bar combines pub food, drinks, televisions and a livelier late-night personality. It is better suited to an early meal than a last-minute drive to the stadium.
- At 310 Park Avenue, the brewpub pairs house beer and cocktails with a scratch kitchen. Weekend public parking surrounds the restored church building.
- Stadium trucksGame-specific food trucks near the south or west fan areas are the simplest choice after parking. Their lineup is promotional, not guaranteed every week.
Gameday Traditions
- GRIT WalkFans line the west-side route to greet the team roughly two and a half hours before kickoff on recent Saturday schedules. Use the matchup timeline for the exact arrival.
- Marching Golden FlashesKent State's band performs before the game and supplies the fight song and stands music. Band Day adds high-school musicians and a much larger halftime sound.
- Flash the Golden EagleThe costumed mascot circulates through tailgates, student areas and the stadium. Blue and gold are the easiest colors for a first-time visitor.
- “Fight on for KSU”Follow the band after scores and during the alma mater. The compact bowl carries coordinated student noise well when the crowd responds.
- Wagon Wheel rivalryThe Akron game is the emotional centerpiece, with the Wagon Wheel trophy at stake. Parking, student turnout and visiting demand are all stronger for this date.
- Freeze OutKent State embraces late-season weekday MACtion with cold-weather giveaways and student refreshments. It is a promotion rather than a warm-weather amenity—dress for an exposed November bowl.
Monuments & Features
- George Jenkins and Jim Phelan Hall of Fame PlazaThe south-end plaza honors Golden Flashes athletics history and links the video board, concessions and fan circulation.
- Phelan LoungeThe north hospitality room recognizes longtime basketball coach Jim Phelan and his wife, Carolyn, while displaying university athletics history.
- Open-bowl simplicityWith no end-zone grandstands, the south plaza and north hospitality spaces bookend the two sidelines.
- Multiuse fieldFootball shares Dix with women's soccer and lacrosse. The stadium also hosted field hockey before that program moved to a dedicated venue.
- Field House settingThe adjacent indoor building and surrounding practice areas make the stadium feel like the center of a compact athletics campus rather than an extension of downtown.

- ADA locationsAccessible seating is available behind the visiting bench, near the northwest Phelan Lounge and atop west sections. The west elevator is behind the team shop.
- Premium hospitalityPhelan Lounge, the Blue & Gold Suite and its heated patio require the correct donor credential or invitation and are not included with an ordinary seat.
Concessions
Concession stands operate at the north and south ends of the west concourse, behind the east stand and at Hall of Fame Plaza behind the south end zone. Expect standard stadium foods, snacks, soft drinks and game-specific additions.
- Cashless standsDix Stadium concessions accept electronic payment, even though day-of-game parking is listed as cash only. Bring both forms.

- Team shopKent Sportswear locations on the west side sell official apparel. Shop before kickoff rather than during the halftime concession rush.
Bag Policy
- Kent State does not publish a clear-bag-only rule for Dix Stadium. Bags larger than 14 by 14 inches are prohibited, and every permitted bag is subject to inspection.
- Cinch bags, backpack-style purses, diaper bags and camera bags are permissible within the stated size policy. Ordinary backpacks and book bags over the limit must return to the vehicle.
- Baby food, formula and snacks are permitted when accompanied by an infant; reasonable quantities required for allergies or health needs are also allowed.
- Outside food and beverages, coolers, bottles, containers, thermoses, strollers, signs, flags, amplified noisemakers, weapons and outside alcohol are prohibited.
