North Dakota State Bison

A Guide to Fargodome

The Fargodome turns North Dakota State football into an indoor pressure chamber in Fargo. Its fixed roof, hard surfaces and close seating trap every third-down roar, regularly pushing sound above 100 decibels. Gate City Bank Field appears only in football configuration, but a dynasty of championships and a fiercely loyal green-and-yellow crowd make the municipal dome feel purpose-built for the Bison.

Getting to Fargodome

Fargodome is at 1800 North University Drive on the north edge of the NDSU campus. Interstate 29 runs west of the university, Interstate 94 crosses south Fargo and North University Drive provides the most obvious local approach. Traffic control changes after events, so the preferred west-side route via 18th Street North, 17th Avenue and Albrecht Boulevard is especially useful for rideshare and charter vehicles.

Driving & Parking

  • Select parking or tailgating
These are different products. Lots B and C sit east of the dome; NDSU lots R, RF and F provide public parking farther south.
  • Football opening times
Reserved tailgate lots open five and a half hours before kickoff; other football lots open five hours before. Do not use the venue's generic two-hour event guidance for a Bison game.
  • Current public rate
The policy lists $10 game-day parking in several general lots. Bring a card and check the current map for seasonal changes.
  • Accessible parking
The building provides accessible spaces, drop-off points, power-assisted doors and accessible seating. Contact Fargodome before the trip if a wheelchair, assisted-listening device or specific route is required.
  • Bus and limo parking
Lot E serves buses and limousines. Large vehicles and trailers occupy multiple paid spaces, with staff determining the required footprint.
  • Postgame closure
Lots close within one hour. Traffic controls may force cars away from the pregame route, so follow officers rather than the navigation app.

Public Transit

  • MATBUS Route 13
Fargo's Route 13 links the Ground Transportation Center downtown, NDSU Transit Hub and Sanford Health Athletic Complex area on Saturdays. Confirm the current timetable before relying on it for kickoff.
  • Postgame detour
When University Drive closes at 19th Avenue, Route 13 cannot serve its normal stops beside Fargodome and follows a marked detour. Ask the driver for the safest available pickup point.
  • Downtown transfer
The Ground Transportation Center at 502 NP Avenue is the main hub. Saturday service may not cover a late playoff finish.
  • Airport reality
Hector International Airport is physically close, but fixed-route transit is not a dedicated football shuttle. A taxi, hotel shuttle or rideshare is simpler when carrying luggage.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • Required west-side zone
Uber, Lyft, taxis, buses and limos must drop off and pick up on Albrecht Boulevard west of the dome.
  • Preferred approach
Drivers should use 18th Street North to 17th Avenue and then turn north on Albrecht Boulevard. Southbound Albrecht traffic from 19th Avenue can be blocked until west lots empty.
  • Set the pin carefully
Use the west-side Albrecht zone, not the east box office. The building is large enough that choosing the wrong entrance creates a long outdoor walk.
  • Postgame demand
Wait for the driver to confirm a position before leaving shelter. Cold weather and controlled egress can produce long delays.

Pregame Festivities

The west lots are the Bison pregame heart. Reserved rows in E, F and G open first, while NQ provides overflow. Green-and-yellow tents, all-weather grills and championship stories fill the pavement. The Stampede March anchors the schedule.

Tailgating

  • Reserved lots E, F and G
These assigned west-side spaces open five and a half hours before kickoff. Saturday arrivals stage through Lot D, and Friday setup is permitted from 4 to 7 p.m. without grilling, flames or alcohol.
  • NQ non-reserved tailgating
Overflow spaces cost $10 each under the current policy, with two-space minimums and vehicle-size limits. Groups must arrive together because saving places is prohibited.
  • Alcohol boundaries
Alcohol is permitted only in Fargodome lots E, F and G and NDSU lot NQ. It is prohibited in other venue and campus parking lots.
  • Thirty-minute cutoff
Every tailgate ends 30 minutes before kickoff, and guests must leave the lots. Tailgating during the game is prohibited.
  • Equipment and safety
Observe the published grill, flame, tent and generator rules; keep emergency lanes open and use the supplied charcoal and waste facilities. Drones are prohibited.
  • Winter discipline
Secure everything before entering because the lots close one hour after the game. Avoid leaving liquids, batteries or unweighted tents exposed to subfreezing weather and prairie wind.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • This NDSU-area bar and grill emphasizes burgers, bison and beer and draws an unmistakably collegiate crowd. Arrive early because its location near campus makes it a natural game-day stop.
  • A Fargo fixture since 1988, “The Turf” pairs comfort food and drinks with decades of NDSU identity. It works well for visitors seeking a student-and-alumni atmosphere.
  • Broadway and surrounding blocks offer restaurants, taprooms and hotel bars only a few minutes south. Eat downtown, then use Route 13 or rideshare rather than moving a car into stadium traffic.
  • The downtown beer hall's sausages, communal tables and broad tap list suit groups and cold-weather weekends. Leave adequate travel time before the Stampede March.
  • Herd & Horns or Turf after the game
Both nearby venues can be packed after a win. A downtown reservation or hotel bar is a useful fallback when local lines become long.

Gameday Traditions

  • Stampede March
Two and a half hours before kickoff, the Gold Star Marching Band leads Thundar, cheer and dance teams and the players up Albrecht Boulevard into the dome. Fans line the route for high fives.
  • “On Bison” entrance
The band plays the fight song as NDSU flags lead the team through smoke and pyrotechnics onto Gate City Bank Field.
  • Bison Lights
Fans activate a feature in the NDSU Athletics app that synchronizes phone lights with the team introduction. Download the app before entering the crowded building.
  • Gold Star Marching Band
“The Pride of North Dakota” anchors the new pregame field show, stadium chant and familiar school songs.
  • Thundar and the Herd
The official mascot represents the program's “Thundering Herd” identity, drawn from the bison that once crossed the prairie in vast numbers.
  • Code Green
Selected games ask every section to wear green, linking the crowd to the defense's play-hard, play-fast philosophy.
  • Playoff atmosphere
December home playoff games are the purest Fargodome experience. The enclosed noise becomes relentless, while the championship banners and record reinforce the sense of expectation.

Monuments & Features

  • Gate City Bank Field
The removable AstroTurf surface installed in 2022 covers the multipurpose arena floor only for football and carries its own sponsored name.
  • Fixed roof and acoustics
Reflective walls and ceiling turn a roughly 18,500-seat crowd into a sound level associated with much larger stadiums.
  • Twelve-display video system
The 2016 installation includes two main end-zone boards, corner displays and fascia ribbons that wrap the compact bowl in information and motion.
  • Civic flood role
Fargodome recovered from approximately eight feet of water in 2000 and became Fargo's primary indoor sandbag-production center during the 2009 Red River flood.
  • Flexible arena floor
Retractable seating and the removable field let the city convert football's fortress into a concert, trade-show or basketball venue.

History & Notable Moments

  • Opening (1992)
Fargodome formally opened on December 2 after Fargo voters financed the $48 million building through a half-cent sales tax.
  • First Bison game (1993)
NDSU defeated Pittsburg State 35–16 before 18,059 in its new indoor home.
  • Flood recovery (2000)
An extraordinary rain event sent about eight feet of water onto the below-grade arena floor before the venue recovered.
  • First home FCS playoff win (2010)
NDSU defeated Robert Morris 43–17, beginning the dome's defining postseason era.
  • Record crowd (2013)
    A venue-record 19,108 watched top-ranked NDSU defeat Missouri State 41–26 on Homecoming.
  • 200th victory (2025)
The Bison beat Southeast Missouri State 41–14 to record their 200th Fargodome win.

Seating & Sections

The football layout forms a compact indoor bowl with sections close to both sidelines and above the enclosed end zones. Sightlines are generally direct, but rows climb steeply and the loudness is unavoidable everywhere. Check the current 3D map because retractable sections and event configurations can change numbering.

  • East sideline
Sections behind the NDSU bench provide a close view of the home team and are attractive to first-time Bison fans.
  • West sideline
These seats face the bench and sit near the loud western tailgate entrance. Midfield locations give the cleanest tactical angle.
  • End-zone sections
The enclosed ends amplify sound and put fans close to scoring plays, but make depth judgment at the opposite goal difficult.
  • Student seating
The student block stands, chants and drives the dome's harshest third-down noise. Choose a sideline reserved seat for a calmer family experience.
  • Suites
Private suites are configured for 16 primary guests with capacity for larger event groups. Confirm catering, parking and entrance privileges with the rental package.
  • Accessible seating
The dome has accessible locations, companion seating and assisted-listening devices. Inventory is limited, so purchase through NDSU well before a playoff date.

Concessions

Fargodome expanded its Bison football menu with local and specialty vendors and added cashless grab-and-go markets behind Sections 8 and 16. Traditional stands still handle the basics, while beer and seltzer sales run until the start of the fourth quarter.

  • Grab & Go Markets
The cashless markets behind Sections 8 and 16 offer a quick route to packaged food, snacks and beverages.
  • Local and specialty stands
Recent football menus have included Brew Bird fried chicken, Cowboy Jack's burgers and fries, Fargo Fillies & MacDaddy's and MinneDonut Co.
  • Dietary variety
Mahana Fresh has supplied vegetarian and vegan choices, while Brew Bird has advertised gluten-free options. Confirm the current vendor placement on arrival.
  • Desserts and coffee
Cold Stone Creamery, Dippin' Dots, Maui Wowi and nitro coffee broaden the menu beyond standard stadium fare.
  • Alcohol
Beer and seltzer may be consumed in all seating areas by guests 21 and older, with sales ending at the start of the fourth quarter.
  • Payment
Concessions accept major cards plus Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. Carrying a payment card remains prudent if phone service slows.

Bag Policy

  • Fargodome encourages guests to bring no bag, but it does not require every permitted bag to be clear. Bags, purses and carrying devices may not exceed 13 by 13 inches.
  • Every bag is searched. Diaper, medical and other necessary oversized bags receive additional screening and a colored identification band.
  • Prohibited bags are not stored by the venue. Return them to the vehicle or make another arrangement before entering the security line.
  • All guests pass through walk-through or handheld metal detectors. Bag-free express lanes are the quickest choice, and most ordinary pocket items need not be removed unless staff directs otherwise.
  • Outside food and beverages are prohibited. A reusable beverage container may enter only if it is clear, plastic and empty; medical exceptions are evaluated separately.
  • Weapons, pepper spray, detachable-lens cameras, laptops, tablets, recording devices, coolers, artificial noisemakers, balloons, selfie sticks and non-service animals are prohibited.
  • The dome generally has no reentry and no item check. Once inside, visit Guest Services near Section 1 for accessibility help, Tag-A-Tot registration or other assistance.
