Three friends. 111 stadiums. One app to rule game day.
Founders Evan Caruso and Devin Dunevant met in college in Miami and for the last 20 years their sports obsession has formed a bond that has spanned multiple moves and both coasts. From the days of drafting custom rosters for their MLB The Show battles to hours of prep for fantasy baseball drafts to celebrating each other's team's titles ('07 New York Giants, '11 New York Giants, '11 St Louis Cardinals, '19 St Louis Blues, '26 New York Knicks) sports has formed the backbone of their daily discussions through it all.
The HomeAway journey really began in 2021 on somewhat of a whim. During a marathon phone call and discussing fans' return to stadiums coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic the friends decided they needed to get to some games together. With Devin having moved away from Miami in 2012 and living in Boston at the time they decided there was no better place to start than the ballpark that changed all future ballparks, Camden Yards.
What started as a plan for one trip to one ballpark quickly expanded to something far more ambitious. That first trip evolved into adding Fenway Park and led to an impromptu stop at Citi Field on the drive back to Boston from Baltimore. From there, the vision was born to visit all of the MLB ballparks, but that alone wasn't enough.
“Surely they'd be asked what stadium was the best, so why not have specific areas the stadium could be judged on and compared.”
If they were going to visit all of the ballparks, they reckoned they needed a way to compare and rate them. On that drive to Boston and composed in a notes doc on Evan's phone those first stadiums were discussed, dissected and rated on 10 different criteria. Next up was SoCal and a new wrinkle added.
For their trip to Dodger Stadium, they realized there was more they could do. Having spent years playing fantasy sports they wanted to find a way to incorporate that into their gameday experience and the single game snake draft was born. Along with another friend who was on the trip they each drafted 4 players in the game they were attending and now had another rooting, and competitive, interest in the action on the field.
It all became real in a hotel in Chicago. After another successful trip and three more stadiums down the boys realized they had created something that other people would want to use. In every stadium they met people on similar trips and with the same dream of visiting every ballpark. Surely they too could use a platform to plan and track their visits, and who doesn't like some friendly competition between friends.
After they got home from Chicago Evan used his network to find a developer to turn this vision into a reality and they were eventually introduced to Nick Stassi. As Lead Developer Nick brings experience from years in SaaS, web and video game development including a stint at Electronic Arts working on multiple titles including the NHL and Tiger Woods franchises. He has not only helped execute the vision, he has helped expand it, adding new ideas and features and turning HomeAway into a fully robust Stadium Companion.
