A Guide to Rynearson Stadium

Rynearson Stadium—“The Factory” to Eastern Michigan football—is a 30,200-seat concrete bowl on the west side of the Ypsilanti campus. Maxx Crosby Field’s custom gray-and-green surface evokes a factory floor, while the track-free layout brings the action closer to the stands. The Eastern Tailgate Zone and the team’s dramatic cinder-block entrance turn a convenient stadium beside Interstate 94 into a distinctive Eagles game day.

Getting to Rynearson Stadium

Rynearson is west of central campus, bounded by Hewitt Road and the athletics complex. Most out-of-town visitors arrive from I-94, while those coming from Ann Arbor can use Washtenaw Avenue or Packard and approach through Ypsilanti.

Driving & Parking

  • From I-94
Use Exit 181 for Michigan Avenue, then follow Hewitt Road north toward the stadium. Police may alter the final turns, so prioritize event signs over the route stored in navigation.
  • General parking
Large lots surround Rynearson and the GameAbove Center. A 2025 game-day ticket purchased in advance also served as the vehicle parking pass; cars without that credential were charged $10 cash on game day. Confirm the current matchup policy before leaving because special events can differ.
  • Show the credential
Have the ticket or parking pass open before reaching the attendant. Advance purchase can eliminate both the fee and a second transaction at the entrance.
  • Opening window
Eastern publishes a game-specific lot schedule. Recent Saturday plans have opened general parking about five hours before kickoff, with premium packages entering earlier.
  • RV parking
RVs use designated VIP inventory and require advance coordination with the EMU Athletic Ticket Office. A recent Homecoming plan priced that credential at $90; it is not guaranteed for every date.
  • Accessible parking
Use the accessible inventory identified on the current map and display the required placard. The adjacent arena lots and courtesy shuttles can reduce walking, but contact the ticket office in advance for the best arrangement.

Public Transit

  • EMU game shuttle
Recent football plans have provided complimentary service from central-campus stops including the Student Center, Eastern Eateries, Pease Auditorium and Westview Apartments to Rynearson. A typical window begins two hours before kickoff, with postgame runs starting in the fourth quarter and continuing for an hour after the game.
  • Parking-lot shuttle
Eastern has also operated courtesy loops among Rynearson, GameAbove Center lots, donor and VIP areas, Gates 1 and 2 and Lots 1–7. Published windows vary, so use the current game page rather than an older timetable.
  • TheRide
Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority routes serve Ypsilanti and the EMU campus, but ordinary weekend schedules are not designed around the final whistle. Check live schedules and pair the bus with the campus game shuttle when available.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • Pregame drop
Use a designated campus or arena landmark outside the active parking queue. The GameAbove Center is recognizable, but its closest lanes may be controlled by donor credentials.
  • Gate 2 activity
Eagle Walk takes place outside Gate 2, so avoid arranging a pickup or drop there during team arrival.
  • Postgame meeting
Walk toward central campus or another open Hewitt Road business before requesting the car. Confirm which side of the road the driver can legally reach.

Pregame Festivities

Eastern's modern pregame is more centralized than its acreage suggests. The principal public activation is at the north end of The Factory, while alumni, families and private groups fill surrounding lots. The sequence peaks with Eagle Walk and the team breaking through a cinder-block wall.

Tailgating

  • Eastern Tailgate Zone
The north-end public area has offered inflatables, lawn games, a Little Caesars food truck, high-top tables and a full-service bar. It is open to ticket holders without requiring a private tailgate setup.
  • View of the entrance
The zone places fans close to the team's wall-breaking entrance. Arrive before Eagle Walk rather than trying to push through the gathering in the final minutes.
  • Eagle Walk timing
The team traditionally arrives outside Gate 2 about two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff, accompanied by the Pride of the Peninsula, cheer and dance teams.
  • Lot opening
Use the kickoff-specific schedule. Five hours is a useful planning benchmark from recent games, but a noon kick, night kick or Homecoming can have a different gate.
  • Cold-weather strategy
Rynearson's open upper rim has little protection from wind. Secure canopies and bring layers even when the afternoon forecast looks comfortable.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • Directly across from the main campus on West Cross Street, it serves house sausages, burgers, loaded tots, vegetarian choices and drinks. It is the closest distinctive pregame bar to the student core.
  • Sidetrack Bar & Grill
In Depot Town on East Cross Street, Sidetrack is a Ypsilanti institution for burgers, pub food and a busy patio. It is several miles from Rynearson, so eat before joining stadium traffic.
  • Downtown on West Michigan Avenue, Ma Lou's offers fried chicken at several spice levels, catfish, tofu sandwiches and rotating sides. Hours and waits deserve a check on game day.
  • The original Depot Town location serves pizza, sandwiches and drinks in a historic commercial district that is easy to combine with Sidetrack or a postgame walk.

Gameday Traditions

  • The Factory
Eastern's central metaphor is blue-collar work. The gray field represents a concrete factory floor, and the program talks about putting in a shift rather than staging a polished spectacle.
  • The wrench
A 51-pound steel wrench symbolizes the work required to “close the gap.” Players selected for weekly recognition carry it as part of the program's identity.
  • Cinder-block wall
Pregame honorees use sledgehammers to break a wall near the north-end entrance before the Eagles take Maxx Crosby Field. It is the venue's most distinctive piece of theater.
  • Eagle Walk
Fans meet the team at Gate 2 approximately two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff. The band, cheerleaders and dancers turn a functional stadium arrival into the main pregame ritual.
  • Pride of the Peninsula
Eastern's marching band leads Eagle Walk, performs on the field and supplies the traditional college-football sound inside an otherwise open bowl.
  • Live eagle flight
Eastern has featured a live bald eagle flying across the stadium during the national anthem. Enter early: security screening and metal detectors make a last-minute arrival likely to miss it.

Monuments & Features

  • Maxx Crosby Field
Named in 2024 for the Eastern star and major donor, the field combines gray turf, green end zones and markings that make Rynearson instantly recognizable on television.
  • Track-free bowl
The 2024 project removed the old running track and expanded the football surface. The resulting geometry feels more football-specific even though the original grandstands remain.
  • Incarnati Athletic Center
The north-end building opened in 2019 with sports-medicine, hydrotherapy, equipment, meeting, recruiting and football operations spaces. Its windows and terrace overlook the field.
  • North-end production
The video board, Tailgate Zone, athletic center and wall-breaking entrance focus much of the venue's energy into one end of the stadium.

History & Notable Moments

  • Opening and dedication (1969)
Rynearson opened against Akron and was dedicated that season in honor of former coach Elton J. Rynearson.
  • Professional cameo (1974)
The Detroit Wheels of the World Football League used the stadium, one of the more unusual chapters in its history.
  • MAC championship run (1987)
Eastern clinched its conference title during the program's landmark 10-win season, which ended with a California Bowl victory.
  • Attendance record (1995)
A crowd of 25,009 for UNLV remains the stadium's listed high, illustrating that Rynearson's large permanent capacity often leaves room for walk-up buyers.
  • Gray turf debut (2014)
Eastern introduced the original gray playing surface and fully committed to The Factory identity.
  • Incarnati Center (2019)
The north-end facility consolidated football operations and materially improved athlete and recruiting spaces.
  • Maxx Crosby transformation (2024)
Track removal and the new custom surface produced the most important stadium change in decades. Eastern christened the field with a double-overtime win over Jacksonville State.

Seating & Sections

  • West side
Reserved Sections 104–109 cover much of the principal home sideline. Midfield rows provide the cleanest view of formations and the north-end entrance.
  • East side
General-admission and visiting inventory can be placed on the east deck. The open bowl means even upper rows retain an unobstructed view, though they are more exposed to wind.
  • Ultimate Fan chairbacks
Eastern's 2026 premium season product includes a midfield chairback, VIP parking and buffer rows in front and behind. It is distinct from ordinary aluminum-bleacher seating.
  • Suites and loge areas
Premium hospitality is associated with the press and Incarnati facilities. These spaces require the corresponding ticket or credential.
  • Accessible seating
Contact the ticket office in advance for wheelchair and companion locations. Courtesy shuttles and the stadium's relatively level exterior lots can simplify the approach.
  • Weather choice
Neither sideline guarantees meaningful cover. Check wind as well as temperature, and choose lower rows if climbing exposed concrete steps is a concern.

Concessions

Rynearson's permanent stands sell familiar football fare such as hot dogs, pizza, nachos, pretzels, popcorn, candy and soft drinks. Selection can expand through the north-end activation and game-specific vendors.

  • Tailgate Zone first
The Little Caesars truck and full-service bar, when scheduled, provide the most distinctive food-and-drink setting before entry. Confirm that the activation is operating for the selected game.
  • Inside service
Use the closest open stand rather than circling the bowl; concourse choices are functional and lines peak between the second quarter and halftime.
  • Alcohol
Approved drinks may be sold at designated locations under identification and cutoff rules. Outside alcohol cannot be carried through security.
  • Payment
Eastern's published parking notice has sometimes required cash, but that does not establish one universal payment rule for concessions. Bring both a card and a small amount of cash, then follow signage at the stand.

Bag Policy

  • Each guest may carry one clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches or a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag.
  • One small clutch no larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches is permitted, with or without a strap, and may accompany the approved clear bag.
  • Medically necessary items are exceptions after proper inspection. Contact Eastern before the game if the item is unusual or requires special handling.
  • Prohibited bags include backpacks, briefcases, coolers, cinch bags, luggage, computer bags, camera bags and ordinary diaper bags unless medically necessary.
  • Seat cushions must have no pockets, zippered compartments or extra straps and remain subject to security examination.
  • Metal detectors operate at stadium entrances, and all belongings may be inspected. Arrive early; an oversized bag cannot be made acceptable merely by placing it inside a clear one.
