A Guide to the Glass Bowl
The Glass Bowl is Toledo football’s 26,038-seat campus home, where WPA stonework meets blue glass, a modern press tower and one of college sports’ most literal identities. Carved into a ravine in the 1930s and transformed after World War II, the stadium features twin north towers, a one-ton Army rocket and a booming touchdown cannon, creating a setting inseparable from Toledo’s “Glass City” heritage.
Getting to the Glass Bowl
The University of Toledo is west of downtown, between Bancroft Street, Dorr Street, Douglas Road and Secor Road. The Glass Bowl stands east of the Student Recreation Center and south of the Ottawa River.
Driving & Parking
- From Interstate 75Use I-475 or U.S. 23 to reach the campus side of Toledo, then approach from Secor, Douglas or Bancroft according to the parking map. Avoid crossing campus toward a preferred lot after police controls begin.
- General areasCurrent inventory includes Areas 1, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25 and 26. Areas 19 and 20 sit east of Douglas; Areas 25 and 26 serve the Dorr/Secor and west-campus side.
- Ticket-linked parkingA parking/convenience fee is included with individual game tickets, and season-ticket members receive general parking as a benefit. No fee or pass is collected at the entrance to general lots.
- First come, first servedA game ticket does not reserve a specific general area. When one lot fills, attendants redirect vehicles to the next available location.
- Opening timeGeneral-admission areas open three hours before kickoff. Premium Areas 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 28 use separate schedules and require the correct pass; several open as early as 6 a.m.
- Accessible parkingArea 18, east of the Recreation Center, is reserved for vehicles displaying a valid state placard. Shuttles serve the southwest and southeast stadium gates.
- Oversized vehiclesRVs, campers and trailers are prohibited in Areas 9 and 10. Eligible athletics donors use Area 6 with the specified Area 9, 10 or special-donor credential.
- No overnight premium parkingToledo does not permit overnight stays in premium areas even with a pass. Campus vehicles also face game-specific relocation deadlines.
Public Transit
- Football shuttlesCourtesy buses begin two hours before kickoff and continue up to one hour after the game. They serve Areas 18, 19 and 20 and use Gates C and D.
- TARTA routesToledo Area Regional Transportation Authority Route 22 serves Bancroft Street along the north side of campus; Routes 3 and 5 stop at the south-campus Transit Center.
- Check weekend schedulesOrdinary TARTA service is not a football express. Confirm the last trip and any detour before choosing it for a night game.
- Campus LiftThe university's regular Lift shuttle has a Recreation Center stop near the Glass Bowl, but published weekday hours should not be assumed to apply on football Saturdays.
- Bike approachThe University/Parks Trail reaches campus from the west. Lock bicycles outside the stadium perimeter and carry lights for the postgame ride.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
- Official destinationToledo directs taxis and rideshares to 1599 South Towerview Boulevard near the campus transportation loop.
- Do not use the stadium pinInterior campus roads feed permit lots and pedestrian zones. The Towerview point gives drivers a predictable place to turn around.
- Postgame pickupWalk back to the transportation loop before requesting a vehicle. Gate and shuttle traffic is heaviest immediately beside the bowl.
- Confirm the sideTowerview has multiple campus connections, so send the street address and a landmark in the app rather than only “University of Toledo.”
Pregame Festivities
The heart of Toledo's official pregame is Area 10 north of the Glass Bowl. Live music, a beer garden, a large screen and Rocket Walk turn a donor parking area into a public-facing fan zone, while the Varsity Tennis Courts host the kids area and students gather in the Launchpad tailgate.
Tailgating
- Area 10Toledo schedules live music beginning about two hours before kickoff, local beer service and a big screen showing other games. Access and parking credentials remain separate from the public entertainment.
- Rocket WalkThe team crosses Area 10 on its way to the locker room, typically about two and a half hours before kickoff. Check the matchup timeline for the precise time.
- Launchpad student tailgateLot 8 serves student organizations. Toledo students receive free football admission with a Rocket ID and occupy stadium Sections 11-20.
- Kids ZoneFamily inflatables and games moved to the UT Varsity Tennis Courts for the 2025 program, creating more space away from vehicle lanes.
- One-space disciplineCanopies cannot consume an additional parking stall. RVs and oversized setups belong only in their authorized area.
- Student setup rulesGrills must remain at least three feet from fencing, tent stakes must be shorter than six inches and amplified tailgate music ends four hours before kickoff.
- Payment preparationThe stadium and portable concession operation are cashless. Bring a card or mobile wallet even when the surrounding private tailgate is self-supplied.
Pregame Bars & Restaurants
- At 3115 West Bancroft Street, this university-edge restaurant serves large New York-style pies, slices and a full bar in a Rocket-friendly setting.
- Inside the Five FieldhouseAt 1040 North Westwood Avenue, just east of the stadium, the taproom offers beer, wine, cocktails, rotating food trucks and live events.
- Rice BoulevardIn the Dorr Street Gateway near Secor, Rice Boulevard serves Korean and Japanese rice bowls, sushi and bento-style meals for a quick pre-parking stop.
- Tony Packo'sThe original East Toledo location is farther from campus but supplies the classic Toledo experience: Hungarian-style hot dogs, chili and signed buns. Build in driving time.
- Hensville and the Warehouse District provide restaurants and breweries around Fifth Third Field. They fit an overnight itinerary better than a last-hour game approach.
Gameday Traditions
- Touchdown TankA blast follows every Toledo touchdown, connecting the Rockets identity to the city's military and manufacturing heritage. The sound is startling from nearby end-zone seats.
- Rocket WalkFans line Area 10 to greet the team before it enters the stadium. A limited paid upgrade has also allowed participants to walk alongside the Rockets.
- Rocket Marching BandThe band performs in Area 10 before moving inside for its field show. Gates open 90 minutes before kickoff, leaving time to watch both appearances.
- Rocky and RocksyToledo's paired rocket mascots circulate through the kids zone, tailgate and stadium. Midnight blue and gold are the correct colors for a first visit.
- “U of Toledo” fight songThe tune, famously covered as “Fair Toledo,” follows scores and the pregame entrance. Regulars punctuate it with the Rockets hand sign.
- Battle of I-75Bowling Green is the defining rival, with the Peace Pipe trophy's successor—the Battle of I-75 Trophy—at stake. Expect a larger crowd and earlier parking demand.
