A Guide to Veterans Memorial Stadium
Veterans Memorial Stadium—“The Vet” to Troy fans—is the 30,000-seat home where Trojans football completed its climb from Division II to the FBS. Larry Blakeney Field sits inside an old-school sideline bowl modernized by a six-story west tower and a major north-end football complex. Tailgate Terrace, Trojan Walk and the Sound of the South concentrate game-day energy around a venue that feels established and ambitious.
Getting to Veterans Memorial Stadium
The Vet sits on the east side of Troy's campus between George Wallace Drive and Luther Drive, south of University Avenue and beside Riddle-Pace Field. US 231 is the main regional approach, but closures make the final campus route more important than the highway.
Driving & Parking
- From US 231Follow the assigned parking route toward George Wallace Drive, John M. Long Drive or the lot entrance printed on the pass. Do not rely on cutting through campus near kickoff.
- Reserved campus lotsOn-campus football parking is primarily allocated through the Trojan Warrior Club according to annual giving. The credential is lot-specific and must be ready before the checkpoint.
- Single-game Lot 5Troy sells single-game parking in Lot 5 for $30 through the official ticket site while spaces remain. Purchase before traveling rather than expecting a cash lot.
- George Wallace closureThe road closes from International Boulevard near Charles Henderson High School to Johnny Long Drive two hours before kickoff and remains closed until one hour after the game.
- North-lot accessNational Guard Armory and North End Zone pass holders may enter during the closure only from the downtown/Elm Street side of George Wallace Drive, not from US 231.
- Accessible parkingThe Troy University Recreation Center lot serves vehicles with valid state-issued accessible credentials. Enter via John M. Long Drive and coordinate seating needs with the ticket office.
- RV parkingCredentialed RVs use the Trojan Arena parking lot under the current plan. Overnight tailgating at the stadium is not permitted.
- Postgame releaseLet police and lot staff choose the first outbound corridor. Walking through Tailgate Terrace until the initial vehicle surge clears can reduce frustration.
Public Transit
- Hotel shuttleTroy Transportation Services runs a free loop from participating local hotels beginning three hours before kickoff, approximately every 15 minutes until the game.
- Stadium stopThe shuttle loads and unloads in front of the Alumni House on Highland Avenue, outside the most congested stadium approaches.
- Downtown pickupTroy Square also serves as a published pickup point, allowing visitors to eat or explore downtown before riding to campus.
- Return serviceBuses begin immediately after the game and continue for one hour. Hotel riders receive a coupon needed for the return trip.
- No city networkTroy has no large fixed-route transit system comparable to a major college city. The football shuttle, walking and rideshare are the practical alternatives to driving.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
- Use the Alumni House areaBecause official shuttles already use Highland Avenue, a legal curb nearby can be clearer than a stadium-gate pin. Follow staff direction if the week's map assigns another zone.
- Avoid George Wallace DriveIts two-hour pregame closure blocks ordinary through traffic. A driver approaching from US 231 may not reach a pin north of the stadium.
- Downtown optionTroy Square is a recognizable meeting point and connects to the free shuttle before kickoff. It can also be easier for postgame pickup after the shuttle queue subsides.
- Reserve cautiouslyThe town's rideshare supply is limited compared with Montgomery. Confirm the driver and exact landmark before leaving the stadium area.
Pregame Festivities
Tailgate Terrace is Troy's game-day hub, positioned behind Riddle-Pace Field's outfield wall and near the south entrance to The Vet. The current program brings together a concert, food trucks, a Kids Fun Zone and Trojan Walk in one walkable area.
Tailgating
- Tailgate TerraceStart here for the broadest public atmosphere. The south-side setting hosts sponsor activations, entertainment, food trucks and the final stretch of Trojan Walk.
- Setup timeTents and equipment may be placed beginning at 7 a.m. on game day, subject to adjustment for an early kickoff. Activities must end at kickoff.
- No overnight eventTroy prohibits tailgating the night before and after the game. Equipment must be removed by 10 a.m. the following morning.
- Corporate tentsA limited number of reserved group spaces are available in Tailgate Terrace. Orders must be placed before game week.
- Trojan Arena RVsRV guests need the proper pass and use the arena lot rather than occupying an ordinary stadium parking space.
- Family focusThe Kids Fun Zone and concert make the Terrace accessible without a private invitation. Verify the weekly performance and opening time on the opponent page.
Pregame Bars & Restaurants
- At 104 Trojan Parkway, this sports bar offers wings, burgers, Alabama game-day food and wall-to-wall televisions. It is a drive from the stadium and fills early.
- At 119 Southland Village, Half Shell serves oysters, shrimp, seafood and cold drinks in a casual setting. Saturday hours extend through the evening.
- Historic downtownTroy Square holds restaurants, shops and a small-town game-weekend atmosphere. It also provides the official downtown shuttle pickup.
- Trojan Food CourtThe campus center includes Chick-fil-A, Boar's Head, Einstein Bros., sushi and other quick options. Check football-weekend hours before depending on it.
- Tailgate Terrace food trucksThe rotating lineup is the simplest last-hour meal and keeps visitors close to Trojan Walk. Vendors change by game.
Gameday Traditions
- Trojan WalkTwo hours and 15 minutes before kickoff, the team and coaches move down University Avenue and through Tailgate Terrace before entering The Vet. Fans and the Sound of the South line the route.
- Brick portalThe team passes through the distinctive Tailgate Terrace gateway on the final approach, creating the day's signature photo and cheering point.
- Sound of the SouthTroy's marching band is central to Trojan Walk, pregame and halftime. Listen for “The Fanfare,” a performance associated with longtime director Dr. Johnny Long.
- T-RoyThe costumed Trojan mascot circulates through Tailgate Terrace and the stadium with cheerleaders and spirit squads.
- “T-R-O-Y”The fight song spells out the university name before the crowd response of “Go! Go! Go!” Learn the simple cadence and join rather than substituting “Trojans.”
- Battle for the BeltSouth Alabama is Troy's defining in-state conference rival. The winner takes a wrestling-style championship belt, intensifying the home date beyond an ordinary Sun Belt game.
