A Guide to Hancock Whitney Stadium

Hancock Whitney Stadium is the modern on-campus home South Alabama football waited for. Opened in Mobile in 2020, the 25,450-seat horseshoe keeps Abraham A. Mitchell Field close to the crowd while broad concourses, suites, loge boxes, social decks and a large video board add comfort. Jaguar Row, Jag City and surrounding green spaces give the compact venue a lively Gulf Coast tailgate atmosphere.

Getting to Hancock Whitney Stadium

The football complex sits north of Old Shell Road and west of the main academic core. Stadium Drive and John Counts Drive carry the closest traffic, while University Boulevard and Zeigler Boulevard handle the larger approach.

Driving & Parking

  • From I-65
Take Exit 5A toward Spring Hill Avenue. Continue as it becomes Zeigler Boulevard, turn left on University Boulevard, right on Old Shell Road and right at the fourth light onto Stadium Drive.
  • Follow the assigned entrance
South Alabama's football map divides the stadium perimeter into numbered entry points and color-coded lots. Approach through the gate printed for the pass instead of following the shortest navigation-app route.
  • Close parking
Most spaces beside the stadium are credentialed season or single-game inventory. A game ticket alone does not authorize parking, and the pass may be restricted to one lot and entry point.
  • Single-game sales
Individual-game passes follow season inventory. Buy through the official ticket system; availability and price vary by lot.
  • Tailgate opening
Parking gates open at 8 a.m. for football tailgating under the current terms, regardless of kickoff time unless athletics publishes an exception.
  • Accessible parking
Use the current map and ticket office to pair an ADA space with an accessible seat. A state-issued placard or plate does not by itself replace any required game parking credential.
  • Postgame traffic
Police release lots along prescribed corridors. Route choice may remain limited until the initial traffic clears.

Public Transit

  • Football shuttle
The published university game-day route runs from the Moulton Bell Tower to the northeast corner of Hancock Whitney Stadium, beginning four hours before kickoff and continuing until at least 30 minutes after the game.
  • JagTran
South Alabama's campus bus network can simplify movement around the university, but routes and operating calendars change. Check the JagTran Tracker rather than assuming normal class-day service.
  • The Wave
Mobile's city bus system serves the University of South Alabama area, including stops along University Boulevard/Old Shell Road. It is not a dedicated stadium express, and hourly-style service can be impractical after a night game.
  • Mobility planning
Confirm lift availability and the closest accessible shuttle stop before game day.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • No permanent zone assumption
South Alabama does not promise one year-round Uber/Lyft point. Use the current map or a staffed campus location outside parking queues.
  • Arrive before peak tailgate traffic
Stadium Drive and John Counts Drive become busy as lots fill. A drop at the Moulton Bell Tower can pair well with the football shuttle if that service is operating.
  • Postgame meeting point
Walk toward the main campus or a named outer lot. A stadium pin may be unreachable during vehicle release.
  • State the landmark
Share the exact building, tower or lot. “USA” can produce a pickup on the wrong side of campus.

Pregame Festivities

South's pregame is a campus tailgate. Jaguar Row forms its center, Jag City hosts larger gatherings, and the grass south of the stadium provides room for independent setups.

Tailgating

  • Jaguar Row
Tents along John Counts Drive form the main organized corridor, activated by alumni and donor groups.
  • Jag City
The larger event area outside Hancock Whitney hosts selected alumni tailgates, group packages and game-specific functions. Access or food may require registration, membership or a purchased package.
  • Open green space
Grassy areas south of the stadium near the SGA Pavilion and Stadium Drive accommodate independent setups. Follow the current map.
  • Turnkey tents
Jaguar Row and the southwest green space offer reserved packages for groups that do not want to transport equipment. Book early.
  • Early opening
The 8 a.m. lot opening supports a full-day tailgate even for an evening kick. Keep equipment inside the space and preserve sidewalks, emergency lanes and vehicle aisles.
  • Coastal heat
Mobile stays hot and humid deep into football season. Use shade, water and sunscreen, and secure tents against fast weather changes.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • This west Mobile barbecue stop serves smoked meats and casual counter service, convenient when approaching from Airport Boulevard.
  • Near the university area, POST combines cocktails and shareable food. Use it for Friday or an early pregame stop.
  • This Oakleigh neighborhood bar offers burgers, sandwiches, live music and local character. It is well east of campus.
  • The historic downtown restaurant is a classic introduction to Mobile oysters. Allow for the cross-city drive.
  • Downtown's Southern restaurant highlights regional ingredients and works best as a reservation dinner before or after game day.
  • Downtown offers seafood, bars and breweries, but is not walkable to the stadium. Leave for campus early.

Gameday Traditions

  • J's Up
Fans raise a hand in the angular “J” gesture that appears throughout South Alabama branding. It is the easiest crowd tradition for a first-time visitor to join.
  • Jaguar Marching Band
The band debuted with football in 2009 and supplies the pregame and halftime soundtrack. Watch for the drumline and spirit groups.
  • SouthPaw and Miss Pawla
South Alabama's costumed jaguar mascots circulate through tailgates and the stadium, providing the most visible link to the Jaguars identity.
  • Battle for the Belt
The rivalry with Troy is the most intense home date. The winner claims a wrestling-style championship belt, and the game has produced Hancock Whitney's full-capacity crowds.
  • Homecoming
The game concludes a week of campus traditions, a pep rally and alumni events. Jag City and Jaguar Row are particularly active.
  • Light show
Musco LEDs and the ribbon displays support coordinated effects for entrances, scores and night-game transitions, giving the young venue its signature in-stadium presentation.

Monuments & Features

  • Abraham A. Mitchell Field
The playing surface honors the Mobile businessman and longtime university supporter whose philanthropy shaped South Alabama athletics and academics.
  • Horseshoe bowl
The seating wraps three sides while the more open end supports social spaces and event flexibility. The plan creates an intimate football view without feeling cramped on the concourse.
  • West premium tower
Eleven suites, 44 loge boxes and the Hargrove Club stack behind the west sideline, concentrating the venue's premium hospitality in one architectural statement.
  • Terrace drink rails
Standing-room terraces let fans watch in a social setting and can be adapted into a concert-stage configuration, reflecting the stadium's multi-event design.
  • Video and ribbon system
A large Daktronics high-definition board, ribbon boards and integrated sound system dominate the presentation. The main display ranked among the country's larger boards when the building opened.
  • Campus integration
The adjacent training center, practice fields and student-success spaces make this a complete football complex.

History & Notable Moments

  • Construction begins (2018)
South Alabama broke ground on August 6, replacing decades of plans for an on-campus football home with a $78 million project.
  • Opening game (2020)
Tulane rallied to beat South Alabama 27–24 on September 12 in a debut played under pandemic attendance restrictions.
  • First home win (2020)
The Jaguars defeated Texas State on October 17 for their first victory at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
  • Senior Bowl arrives (2021)
Mobile's showcase for NFL prospects moved from Ladd-Peebles Stadium to Hancock Whitney, immediately giving the young venue a national annual event.
  • Battle for the Belt sellout (2022)
A full-capacity rivalry crowd watched South beat Troy 38–10, one of the defining atmosphere nights in stadium history.
  • First bowl championship (2023)
South Alabama routed Eastern Michigan 59–10 in the 68 Ventures Bowl, securing the program's first bowl title on its home field.

Seating & Sections

The west sideline contains the premium tower and home-side amenities; the east provides a broad conventional grandstand; the north-end student block supplies the most active crowd; and social terraces create standing-room alternatives.

  • West sideline
Reserved lower-bowl seats sit beneath the suites and club on the home-oriented side.
  • East sideline
Traditional seating faces the tower and can offer a good view of the board and lighting effects. Afternoon sun exposure should influence early-season seat selection.
  • Student sections 119–129
South students occupy this large contiguous block on a first-come basis after claiming the required ticket. Expect standing, chants and the highest-energy general seating.
  • Hargrove Club
Club tickets pair an outdoor seat with indoor hospitality on the west side. Verify food, beverage and parking benefits for the exact package.
  • Suites and loge boxes
Eleven suites and 44 loges offer private or semi-private premium viewing. Access is controlled and does not come with an ordinary adjacent-section ticket.
  • Terrace standing room
Drink rails suit fans who prefer movement to a fixed seat. Benefits differ by product.
  • Accessible seating
Wheelchair and companion locations are integrated into the modern bowl. Arrange exchanges and parking before the event rather than asking at a sold-out gate.

Concessions

Hancock Whitney has broad concourses and as many as 95 concession points of sale. Walk beyond the first visible line before committing.

  • Distributed counters
Service appears around the concourse. Use the closest stand or a quieter corner before halftime.
  • Core menu
Hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, pretzels, candy and soft drinks form the dependable stadium base. Specialty and local-vendor options may rotate by season or event.
  • Premium service
Suites, loge boxes and the Hargrove Club use separate hospitality arrangements. Confirm what is included; premium access does not guarantee every item is complimentary.
  • Alcohol sales
Approved beer or other beverages may be sold at designated locations with age verification and event-specific cutoffs. Outside alcohol remains prohibited.
  • Payment planning
Carry a card or mobile wallet and charge the phone used for tickets.
  • Empty bottle exception
Each guest may bring one empty, clear plastic water bottle through security and use available refill access, a valuable option during hot Mobile games.

Bag Policy

  • Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC totes may not exceed 12 by 6 by 12 inches. Any logo may be no larger than 4.5 by 3.4 inches.
  • A one-gallon clear, resealable plastic storage bag is permitted as an alternative.
  • One small non-clear clutch or wallet may not exceed 6.5 by 4.5 inches, with or without a handle or strap.
  • Necessary medical, family and child-care items are permitted after inspection. An ordinary non-clear diaper bag is not automatically allowed, so carry the needed supplies in a compliant bag when possible.
  • Purses, backpacks, fanny packs, luggage, camera cases, binocular cases, diaper bags and other non-clear or oversized bags are prohibited.
  • Seat cushions must be less than 16 inches wide, contain no metal bracketing or pockets and, if they have a back, must not reduce the legroom behind.
  • One empty clear plastic bottle is allowed per person. All bags and exception items remain subject to search, and gates normally open 90 minutes before kickoff.
