M.M. Roberts Stadium
A Guide to M.M. Roberts Stadium
M.M. Roberts Stadium is better known as “The Rock,” a name earned when Southern Miss players helped haul concrete during its 1938–39 construction. The modern 36,000-seat venue still occupies that Hattiesburg campus footprint, with tall sideline grandstands and a premium south tower framing Carlisle-Faulkner Field. Spirit Park, Eagle Walk and the Pride of Mississippi give Golden Eagles game day a proud, concentrated rhythm.
Getting to M.M. Roberts Stadium
The Rock sits between West Fourth Street and Hardy Street, just east of US 49. Championship Lane, Eagle Walk Drive and the streets closest to the building become controlled pedestrian or permit territory before kickoff.
Driving & Parking
- From US 49Approach campus from Hardy Street or West Fourth Street according to the parking-pass route. Championship Drive is not accessible from US 49 before kickoff, so do not follow a navigation shortcut there.
- Color-coded zonesReserved lots use Gold, Blue and Black approach routes. Display the assigned digital pass at the checkpoint and enter only through the highlighted corridor for that zone.
- Reserved lotsClose inventory includes areas around Scianna Hall, the Lott Center, East Memorial Drive, Eagle Walk, the Payne Center and the Thad Cochran Center. The exact pass controls; a ticket does not include parking.
- Open and overflow parkingSouthern Miss preserves non-designated options across campus for students and visitors. Check the current map before choosing a space because additional lots can become reserved for high-demand games.
- RV parkingCentury Park North and the Payne Center lot accommodate properly credentialed RVs. Entry begins at 6 p.m. Friday and vehicles must leave by noon Sunday.
- Tailgate unloadingDesignated drop zones include the Thad Cochran Center lot, East Memorial Drive and Ray Guy Way at the roundabout. Game-day unloading ends five hours before kickoff unless the weekly schedule sets an earlier time.
- Accessible assistanceAccessible seating uses Gates 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Ask a parking attendant to summon the free mobility cart or call the published assistance number.
- Postgame flowPolice direct vehicles toward Fourth or Hardy based on conditions. Follow the assigned exit rather than trying to reverse the inbound route.
Public Transit
- Hub City TransitThe Green and Gold routes serve the Southern Miss area, but regular city buses operate only Monday through Friday, generally ending by 6:30 p.m. They are not a dependable Saturday football solution.
- Gold RouteThis campus loop connects perimeter Open Zone parking with central stops on weekdays. Southern Miss IDs ride free; the regular public fare is low, but service does not automatically extend to game day.
- Official mobility shuttleSouthern Miss authorizes its own game-day shuttle and cart service inside the secured perimeter. Guests needing assistance from a lot should request it through the attendant.
- Walkable campusOpen parking can require a substantial walk, but the main campus is compact and pedestrian-oriented. Use well-lit routes and avoid vehicle checkpoints.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
- Use the outer campusSouthern Miss does not publish one permanent rideshare zone. Choose a legal curb near Fourth Street, Hardy Street or an open outer lot rather than the stadium security perimeter.
- Six-a.m. perimeterThe area within roughly 100 feet of The Rock closes to private vehicles at 6 a.m. on game day; a rideshare cannot deliver directly to a gate.
- Avoid Eagle WalkEast Memorial Drive and the route wrapping around the stadium fill with the team, band and fans before kickoff. Arrange the drop before those activities begin.
- Postgame pickupWalk beyond the color-coded exit corridors before requesting a car. Share a named campus building or lot, not simply “The Rock.”
Pregame Festivities
Spirit Park is the public center of Southern Miss game day. Recent schedules have opened it about five hours before kickoff with inflatables, family activities, radio programming and a free concert. Eagle Walk and the Pride of Mississippi performance then carry the crowd toward the gates.
Tailgating
- Spirit ParkLocated along Ray Guy Way/Eagle Walk, the park combines student tailgating with the official fan festival. Music, sponsor activities and Seymour appearances vary by opponent.
- Setup windowTents and equipment may be placed beginning at noon Friday. Tailgating starts on game day, ends at kickoff and all items must be removed by 10 a.m. Sunday.
- First-come spacesPersonal tents belong only in designated areas and generally operate first come, first served. A tent may not exceed 12 by 20 feet without written permission.
- Safe anchoringDo not stake into the ground unless approved. Use water ballasts or weights, keep sidewalks clear and never chain a tent to signs or landscaping.
- GrillsSmall portable propane and charcoal grills are allowed on stable ground away from tents and branches. Open fires are prohibited, and hot coals cannot be dumped on campus.
- Alcohol and soundCommon-source alcohol and drinking games are prohibited. Only university-sponsored amplified performers are allowed; personal music must remain family-friendly and reasonable.
Pregame Bars & Restaurants
- At 1315 Hardy Street, this Hattiesburg staple offers a large tap list, pub food, Southern dishes and an outdoor screen. It is close enough to pair with a campus walk when conditions permit.
- Across Hardy Street in The District at Midtown, the diner serves breakfast and lunch in a room filled with Hattiesburg and Southern Miss imagery.
- Robert St. John's Midtown restaurant combines New Orleans-influenced seafood, pasta and Southern cooking. Expect a crowd on football weekends.
- This polished Hattiesburg option serves Creole dishes, steaks and seafood and works especially well for Friday dinner.
- The downtown brewery is a strong postgame or Friday destination for Mississippi craft beer. Arrange transportation to campus afterward.
- The Porter, Fairley's Wings and other locally owned stops offer an alternative to the immediate campus rush, but downtown is not a stadium walk for every visitor.
Gameday Traditions
- Eagle WalkA cannon signals the team parade, which begins on East Memorial Drive and wraps around The Rock into Spirit Park. The current weekly timeline controls, often placing it about 90 minutes before kickoff.
- Painted street of goldIncoming students repaint Eagle Walk during Welcome Week, renewing a tradition begun in 1997 and leaving the team approach unmistakably Southern Miss.
- Pride of MississippiThe marching band follows Eagle Walk with a performance through Spirit Park, then supplies the stadium's pregame and halftime soundtrack.
- “Southern to the Top!”The school call and fight-song refrain finish with “To the Top,” a phrase heard throughout entrances, scores and victory celebrations.
- Seymour d'CampusThe Golden Eagle mascot appears in Spirit Park and around the stadium. The full name is a wordplay on “see more of the campus.”
- Black and goldPromotions can call for Gold Out or Black Out attire. Check the opponent page before packing because the designated color changes.
