A Guide to Kidd Brewer Stadium

Kidd Brewer Stadium—“The Rock” to Appalachian State fans—is a 30,000-seat mountain pressure cooker in Boone. Set roughly 3,333 feet high in a narrow campus valley, the venue pairs steep grandstands, Miller Hill and Blue Ridge Mountain views with crowds that regularly exceed listed capacity. The weather can change quickly, but the intensity and scenic setting make App State football one of the Sun Belt’s defining experiences.

Getting to Kidd Brewer Stadium

The stadium occupies the south side of Appalachian State's central campus. Current athletics game-day materials direct drivers to 270 Stadium Drive, Boone, NC 28608; university event listings also associate the north-end facility with 425 Jack Branch Drive. For navigation on game day, use the address and lot route printed on the parking credential because police closures can make an ordinary map app misleading.

Driving & Parking

  • From the east and Winston-Salem
US 421 is the primary approach. Follow event signs rather than making a last-minute downtown turn; streets near the stadium become pedestrian-heavy.
  • From the south and Charlotte
US 321 enters Boone from Blowing Rock. Allow extra time for two-lane mountain traffic and leaf-season visitors, then follow the route assigned to the parking pass.
  • Permit lots
Most close-in Appalachian State lots are Yosef Club donor inventory and require a displayed or mobile credential. Lots commonly open at 8 a.m. for afternoon games, but the actual opening time moves with kickoff. The pass—not habit from a previous season—controls.
  • Watauga County Parking Deck
The deck at 140 North Water Street has recently offered about 140 single-game spaces for $50. It is roughly a 17-minute walk to the stadium and is one of the clearest public options, but it is first-come and can fill early.
  • Community parking
Recent downtown choices have included First Baptist Church at 375 West King Street, the Hope Center at 208 Howard Street, Austin & Barnes Funeral Home at 194 Queen Street and Grace Lutheran Church at 115 East King Street. Prices, charitable-donation requests and alcohol or grill rules vary, so confirm directly before relying on one.
  • Free alternatives
App State has offered approximately 75 first-come spaces at the Levine College of Health Sciences with an AppalCART connection. County courthouse and administration spaces can also be free on weekends when posted, but alcohol and overnight parking are prohibited there.
  • Postgame traffic
Police direct each lot away from the stadium along a predetermined route. A preferred pregame road may be unavailable after the final whistle; accept the directed flow and begin the longer trip only after clearing campus.

Public Transit

  • AppalCART game-day network
Boone's fare-free system supplements normal Saturday service with Purple, Express, Orange and Gray routes beginning about four hours before kickoff and continuing approximately two hours after the game.
  • Accessible shuttles
Two paratransit buses connect Hill Street with the stadium beginning four hours before kickoff. Pregame service runs toward the venue through the fourth quarter; postgame service leaves the Stadium East Gate for roughly two hours.
  • Poplar Grove connection
A separate shuttle has connected Poplar Grove Road with the Peacock Traffic Circle, useful when the current parking map assigns a remote campus area.
  • Plan the return
Save the route name and boarding point before entering. Crowds and temporary closures can move an ordinary stop, and cellular service becomes unreliable when more than 30,000 phones arrive in the valley.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • No permanent published zone
App State's current public guide does not identify a dedicated Uber or Lyft compound. Choose a downtown or outer-campus landmark outside the stadium closure area, then walk the final stretch.
  • Avoid Stadium Drive
The Mountaineer Walk and pedestrian plan restrict Stadium Drive and Jack Branch Drive before kickoff. A pin beside the gate can strand the driver on the wrong side of a barricade.
  • Small-market supply
Boone has fewer drivers than a major city and demand spikes at once after games. Schedule early when possible, expect surge pricing and consider eating downtown while the first wave clears.
  • Confirm on foot
Agree on a business name and street rather than a moving map pin. Never step into an active traffic lane to meet a car during the police-controlled postgame release.

Pregame Festivities

App State's day begins in the parking lots and builds toward the Mountaineer Walk. The best plan is to park once, explore downtown or a tailgate on foot and reach Stadium Drive well before the team appears. On colder dates, sun on a downtown patio can turn into wind and shade inside the bowl, so carry the layers you will need later.

Tailgating

  • Yosef Club lots
The close campus lots produce the densest traditional tailgating, with black-and-gold tents, grills and long-running family setups. Access follows the parking credential and generally begins at the published lot-opening time.
  • Alcohol rules
Malt beverages and unfortified wine are allowed only in designated tailgate areas. Liquor, kegs, common-source containers and glass are prohibited, and Boone's open-container law still applies on public streets and sidewalks.
  • Mountaineer Walk
About two hours and 40 minutes before kickoff, the team leaves the Mark E. Ricks Athletics Complex/Harrill Practice Facility area and proceeds down Stadium Drive and Jack Branch Drive to the Echota West Gate. Line the route early and stay behind event barriers.
  • First Baptist option
The church's West King Street lot has recently opened at 8 a.m. on Saturdays, accepted a parking donation and allowed tailgating without charcoal grills. It combines a downtown location with a manageable walk.
  • Grace Lutheran option
This East King Street lot has opened about five hours before kickoff and allowed tailgating, while prohibiting alcohol and large grills. It is a useful quieter choice for families.
  • Pack for the climate
Mountain wind arrives quickly. Weight tents, secure loose items, bring rain protection and hydrate even in cool weather.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • At 130 North Depot Street, this downtown brewery pairs house beer with wood-fired pizza and a two-story porch. It is an excellent Friday-night stop and a lively pregame base within walking distance of campus.
  • The Boone institution at 130 Hardin Street serves family-style Southern country food, with weekend breakfast as well as lunch and dinner. Arrive hungry and allow time for a wait on football weekends.
  • Located at 1711 Highway 105, The Cardinal is known for burgers, local meats and thoughtful vegetarian and vegan choices. It requires a drive from the stadium, so use it before committing the car to a game-day lot.
  • The brewery and restaurant at 465 Industrial Park Drive offers a beer garden and a broad food menu away from the tightest campus traffic. It works particularly well for a Friday gathering or a postgame wait-out.
  • King Street
Downtown Boone's main street holds coffee shops, restaurants and retail in a compact strip. It is the right area for groups that want choices without moving the car, but build in the uphill walk back toward campus.

Gameday Traditions

  • Mountaineer Walk
The team procession is the defining pregame ritual. The band, cheerleaders and Yosef lead the crowd as players make the roughly two-hour-and-40-minute approach to kickoff.
  • “The Rock”
The stadium's nickname reflects both its mountain setting and the hard-edged home advantage App State built here. “Pack The Rock” language appears throughout the game-day experience.
  • Black and gold
App State supporters dress the bowl in the school colors, with designated Black Saturday and stripe or color games intensifying the effect. Check the week's promotion before packing.
  • Yosef
The bearded mountaineer mascot embodies the university's Appalachian identity and circulates through pregame events, the student section and in-game celebrations.
  • Miller Hill
Students and general-admission fans on the south-end grass create an informal, packed-in backdrop. The hill is as much a social ritual as a seating area, especially for major opponents.
  • Band and fight song
The Marching Mountaineers drive the pregame pageantry and post-score celebrations. Stay through the team entrance rather than treating the stadium only as a kickoff destination.

Monuments & Features

  • Jerry Moore Plaza and statue
Outside the north end, the plaza and bronze figure honor the coach who led App State to three consecutive FCS national championships. They were dedicated in 2021 and make the clearest first-visit photo stop.
  • Blue Ridge setting
Few FBS venues integrate the landscape this completely. The open south end and upper rows frame wooded slopes, changing leaves and fast-moving weather.
  • North end zone facility
The modern complex contains football operations, retail, dining and the Grandview event room beneath 1,000 premium club seats. It gives the once-open end a finished architectural anchor.
  • Appalachian Athletics Center
The west-side structure houses suites, club seating and press functions above the home sideline, creating the bowl's tallest established premium face.
  • Miller Hill
The regraded grass slope behind the south end is a rare surviving general-admission feature at this level. It also keeps the stadium visually connected to the mountain beyond.
  • Video display
The 2017 Daktronics board spans approximately 50 by 90 feet overall with about 2,500 square feet of 13HD display, large enough to remain visible from the hill and upper deck.

History & Notable Moments

  • Conrad Stadium opens (1962)
App State defeated Elon 22–6 in the first game in the original 10,000-seat building.

The stadium was renamed for the former Appalachian coach whose 1937 team finished the regular season unbeaten and unscored upon.
  • Three-title dynasty (2005–07)
The Rock served as home base for three straight FCS national championship teams, the era that elevated App State into a national football brand.
  • First Sun Belt title game (2018)
App State defeated Louisiana 30–19 in the conference's inaugural championship game, bringing an FBS trophy celebration to Boone.
  • Coastal Carolina upset (2021)
A field goal at the horn gave App State a 30–27 win over No. 14 Coastal before 31,061 on a Wednesday night.
  • North Carolina thriller (2022)
A stadium-record 40,168 watched the Mountaineers trade 124 points with the Tar Heels before falling 63–61.
  • College GameDay and the Hail Mary (2022)
ESPN's show made its first Boone visit, then App State beat Troy 32–28 on a tipped final-play touchdown now inseparable from modern stadium lore.

Seating & Sections

Kidd Brewer is organized around the west home stand, the two-level east side, the premium north end and Miller Hill in the south. Its compact footprint puts most fans close to the field, but elevation changes, sun and the grass hill make sections meaningfully different. The proposed East Tower is not an existing seating option; buy from the current chart only.

  • West sideline
The home side sits beneath the Appalachian Athletics Center and provides access to the established suite and club structure. Lower rows feel especially close after removal of the track.
  • East lower and upper decks
These traditional grandstands face the home side. The upper deck supplies excellent mountain and formation views but adds stairs, wind exposure and a longer concession trip.
  • North End Zone Club
Approximately 1,000 premium seats connect to the modern north building and Grandview hospitality. Packages vary, so confirm included food, beverages and access rather than assuming every north ticket is all-inclusive.
  • Miller Hill
The south-end lawn is first-come general admission and rewards an early arrival. Bring only a permitted blanket or backless foam cushion, wear traction-friendly shoes and expect to stand as the crowd compresses.
  • Student sections
App students create the most continuous noise, with Student Yosef Club access offering priority opportunities including midfield inventory. Visiting families seeking a calmer experience should leave a buffer from the band and dense student areas.
  • Temporary inventory
App State has used supplemental north bleachers for high-demand seasons. Because temporary seating can change, verify the 2026 map and do not infer that an older ticket-map section remains.
  • Accessible seating
Wheelchair and companion locations and elevator-served premium areas are available, but the campus grade is significant. Arrange accommodations with the ticket office before game day and use the assigned accessible route.

Concessions

App State combines standard stadium food, local vendors and alcohol sales. Lines are most manageable before the team entrance and early in the second quarter; the compact concourses become crowded at halftime.

  • West-side service
The west stand includes conventional counters, Yosef's Sweet Shack for frozen drinks and a Locker Room Grab & Go market intended to shorten transactions.
  • East Grab & Go
The east concourse has an enhanced self-service market in addition to its regular counters, a useful option when traditional lines stretch into circulation paths.
  • Local food trucks
Recent game-day lineups have featured The Cardinal, Hungry Howie's, Little Wing Ice Cream, Taqueria La Monarca and Sunset Slush. Vendors rotate, so treat the week's fan guide as definitive.
  • Beer sales
Booneshine selections and national brands have been sold through the end of the third quarter, with a two-drink transaction limit. Current pricing and the final service cutoff can change by season.
  • Cash and cards
Main east and west stands have accepted both, with one designated cash-only lane on each side in the latest guide. A card or mobile wallet remains the safer default.
  • Outside food
Food and drinks may not enter, with the current exception of one unopened standard water bottle per guest. Medical needs should be presented for inspection.
  • Merchandise
Four recent points included Jerry Moore Plaza, the west concourse, the east concourse and Yosef's Locker in the north end. Yosef's Locker has opened at 10 a.m. and remained available until one hour after the game.

Bag Policy

  • Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags may be no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches.
  • One small non-clear clutch no larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches is permitted, with or without a strap.
  • Medically necessary items are exceptions after inspection. Contact event staff in advance when the equipment or supplies are substantial.
  • Diaper bags, ordinary backpacks, purses, fanny packs, coolers and camera or binocular cases are prohibited even when their contents would otherwise be allowed.
  • Backless foam seat cushions are permitted. Seatbacks may be no wider than 18 inches and may not have arms, clamps, pockets or storage compartments.
  • Umbrellas, strollers, folding chairs, artificial noisemakers and outside food or drink are prohibited; one unopened standard water bottle is the stated beverage exception.
  • Gates generally open two hours before kickoff, with earlier access for designated premium or Student Yosef Club programs. Walk-through metal detectors are used, screenshots do not function as mobile tickets and reentry is not allowed.
