A Guide to Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field

Bridgeforth Stadium gives James Madison football an intense, student-driven home in Harrisonburg. A steep two-tier grandstand towers above Zane Showker Field, more than 500 Marching Royal Dukes can fill the soundscape and touchdown streamers turn the air purple and gold. With 24,877 permanent seats but crowds regularly exceeding 26,000, the compact stadium captures the ambition and rapid national rise of the Dukes.

Getting to Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field

The stadium stands at 250 Champions Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22807, beside Godwin Hall and the Godwin Transit Center. I-81 runs immediately east of campus, while Port Republic Road, Route 33, Bluestone Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Way feed the game-day network.

Driving & Parking

  • From I-81 northbound
Exit 245 at Port Republic Road, move into the right lane and turn onto Bluestone Drive. Continue past Showker Hall, then turn left onto Champions Drive only if the assigned parking route permits it.
  • From I-81 southbound
Exit 247 at Route 33 provides access through Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Paul Street and Duke Drive; Exit 245 can also serve the Port Republic side. Follow the game map once on campus.
  • Reserved lots
Duke Club lots around Bridgeforth require the correct hangtag. They are not available for passenger unloading, and a reserved space is no longer guaranteed 30 minutes after kickoff.
  • Free general parking
Non-reserved campus lots are available first-come at no charge. The Ballard and Warsaw-area parking decks and remote campus areas commonly pair with game shuttles; confirm the current map before choosing one.
  • Accessible parking
Lot C3 holds designated accessible parking and provides an ADA shuttle to the stadium. Arrange accessible seating and parking together with the ticket office.
  • RVs and buses
Lot R10 off Hunters Road accepts reserved RV and bus parking on a single-game basis. Advance purchase is required, prices vary and availability is limited.
  • Lot timing
Reserved-lot tailgating begins at 8 a.m. for kickoffs at 6 p.m. or earlier and at noon for later games. General-lot tailgating begins four hours before kickoff.
  • Tow warning
Vehicles remaining in designated football-reserved lots after 6 a.m. on game day can be towed, even when they carried a normal campus permit the previous evening.

Public Transit

  • Football shuttles
JMU publishes free buses from the CISAT stop, Festival Conference Center, Convocation Center/University Boulevard, Lot R10 and accessible Lot C3.
  • Hotel and housing service
Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation adds free routes from selected hotels, apartment communities and off-campus student housing to the Godwin Transit Center.
  • Service window
Campus football shuttles generally run from two hours before kickoff through one hour after the game. Hotel and apartment service often begins approximately three hours before kickoff; consult the date-specific HDPT schedule.
  • Godwin Transit Center
Most routes converge beside Bridgeforth. Duke Dog Alley, the pedestrian tunnel under I-81, connects the stadium side with east-campus destinations.
  • Passio GO!
The city's official real-time app shows JMU and Harrisonburg bus arrivals. Save the route color and stop name before entering the stadium.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • Official location
Uber, Lyft and other rideshare vehicles are directed to the shuttle pickup and drop-off point at Hartman Hall.
  • Do not use reserved lots
Credentialed parking areas do not permit unloading. A stadium-gate pin can send the driver into a blocked route.
  • Postgame demand
Walk to Hartman Hall, confirm the license plate and expect surge pricing after a sellout. Downtown is close enough to wait over a meal if the queue is severe.
  • Use the transit center carefully
Godwin is for game shuttles, not an improvised rideshare stop. Keeping private cars at Hartman protects the bus lanes.

Pregame Festivities

JMU tailgating spreads across campus, with the most established gatherings in Duke Club lots and a looser visitor scene in the free general areas. The Marching Royal Dukes' stadium parade begins about 30 minutes before game time, so the lot should be packed up earlier than at many schools.

Tailgating

  • Reserved Duke Club lots
The areas nearest Bridgeforth open at 8 a.m. for most Saturday kickoffs and support the longest-running alumni setups. The credential controls both entry and location.
  • General lots
Free parking makes a JMU visit unusually approachable, but tailgating cannot begin until four hours before kickoff and must end at game time.
  • One-space setup
Tents, tables and grills belong directly behind the vehicle and may not consume another stall or block a travel lane.
  • Gas grills only
Charcoal grills, fire pits and other open flames are prohibited. No grilling is allowed inside parking decks.
  • Cleanup
JMU distributes black bags for waste and clear bags for recyclables. Leave tied bags behind the vehicle for collection and secure valuables before walking away.
  • Postgame window
Reserved-lot tailgating must end two hours after the game. General-lot activity ends at kickoff, not after the final whistle.
  • Weather
Shenandoah Valley afternoons can shift from sun to cold quickly. Weight the tent, bring layers and follow video-board or public-address directions if lightning requires evacuation.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • The original location at 80 South Main Street serves American Wagyu burgers, creative specials and a deep craft-beer list in a compact downtown room.
  • At 92 South Main Street, Billy Jack's offers sliders, wings, sticky nuggets, weekend brunch and craft beer. It is energetic and fills early.
  • The Ice House taproom at 217 South Liberty Street, Suite 105 pours locally brewed beer in a roomy downtown setting about a mile from campus.
  • Next door at 217 South Liberty Street, Suite 101, this farm-to-table restaurant serves seasonal American food with wine and local beer. Reserve for Friday dinner.
  • Downtown Harrisonburg
Main and Liberty streets gather dozens of independent restaurants within a compact district. Use Hartman Hall or a hotel shuttle rather than driving between downtown and campus close to kickoff.

Gameday Traditions

  • Purple and gold streamers
After every JMU touchdown, fans throw paper streamers into the air. Bring the school colors, throw upward rather than toward the field and let event staff handle what lands outside the seating row.
  • “J-M-U … Duuuuukes!”
The first-down call comes with a step and sweeping arm motion. Follow the student section and stretch the final word.
  • Marching Royal Dukes
One of the nation's largest college bands enters with “Virginia's Finest” billing and performs the distinctive JMU fight song. Its parade toward the stadium begins about 30 minutes before kickoff.
  • Duke Dog
The crowned bulldog, named for former university president Samuel Page Duke, works the student section and sideline. A bronze Duke Dog also stands near the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
  • Team entrance
Purple smoke, streamers, the band and the south-end tunnel combine for a concentrated runout. Be seated before the final pregame sequence.
  • Cannon and fireworks
Scoring and entrance effects are loud, particularly near the end zones. Prepare children and noise-sensitive guests before kickoff.
  • Color games
The 2026 calendar uses fight-song and “Start Wearing Purple” lyrics to signal purple, white and fan-choice dates. Check the opponent-specific promotion.

Monuments & Features

  • Duke Dog statue
The bronze mascot outside the Atlantic Union Bank Center is a popular pregame photo stop and a short walk from the stadium.
  • Plecker Athletic Performance Center
The south-end football building contains training, sports medicine, academic and Hall of Fame spaces and frames the team entrance.
  • West grandstand
The 2011 structure rises more than 134 feet, making the 24,877-seat stadium look far larger from the east side.
  • Zane Showker Field
The named FieldTurf Revolution 360 surface uses strong purple-and-gold graphics. Zane Showker was a Harrisonburg businessman, benefactor and former Board of Visitors rector.
  • Field suites
Four south-end field-level suites introduced in 2025 create a close premium product beside the performance center.
  • Godwin Hall side
The east stand preserves the scale of earlier Bridgeforth configurations opposite the massive west rebuild, giving the stadium an intentionally asymmetrical profile.

Seating & Sections

Bridgeforth's west side holds the tall two-tier premium structure; the lower east side borders Godwin Hall; the north contains permanent end-zone seating; and Plecker closes the south. The compact footprint produces good sightlines, but shade, stair demands and student energy vary sharply.

  • West 100 level
Lower sideline seats sit behind accessible platforms and close to the home bench. They provide the easiest access to the rebuilt west concourse.
  • West 300 and 400 levels
These elevated decks deliver outstanding tactical and valley views. The climb, wind and late-season cold are real; use elevators only when the credential or accommodation permits.
  • Club Level
Approximately 1,000 seats connect to an indoor club room, with 16 traditional suites above. Benefits depend on the ticket package.
  • East sections 4 and 5
Premium chairbacks added in 2025 improve comfort on the older Godwin side and face the west tower.
  • Student seating
Students enter exclusively through Gate C and occupy the most active general-admission areas. Expect standing, streamers and strong band volume.
  • North end
Permanent end-zone seating is close to scoring action and offers a direct view of the south video board and team entrance.
  • South field suites
The four 2025 suites offer exceptionally low, intimate sightlines and premium service near Plecker.
  • Accessible seating
Reserved wheelchair and companion positions sit behind the 100 level and behind the upper 300 level. Advance booking is recommended; JMU does not provide wheelchairs.

Concessions

JMU Dining operates a cashless stadium with fixed stands and alcohol kiosks on both sides. Credit, debit and Apple, Google and Samsung Pay are accepted; reverse ATMs are not available.

  • Fanfare stands
The larger stands near sections 203 and 408 serve burgers, hot dogs, veggie dogs, nachos, fries, pretzels, ice cream and hot drinks.
  • Section 209 barbecue
This west-side location adds barbecue sandwiches and fries to the standard stadium menu.
  • Sideline Sizzles
Near Section 3 on the east side, the stand serves burgers, hot dogs, nachos, fries and Rookie's ice cream.
  • Kickers and Snack Shack
Sections 403 and 8 provide conventional favorites; the Snack Shack also carries beer and other alcohol.
  • Beer kiosks
Stands around sections 5, 201, 214, 216, 218 and 406 have offered regional craft beer, cider, seltzer, wine, national beer, water and snacks. Inventory rotates.
  • Duke Deals
The Section 215 kiosk has accepted eligible JMU Dining punches for designated items. Visitors should not assume a game ticket includes that benefit.
  • No outside food
Food and beverages cannot enter. Concessions open with the gates 90 minutes before kickoff, so buy early and avoid the halftime crush.
  • Team Stores
Follett merchandise locations operate on the lower and upper concourses and use the same cashless policy.

Bag Policy

  • Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags may not exceed 12 by 6 by 12 inches.
  • A one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag is an approved alternative.
  • One small non-clear clutch, with or without a strap, may not exceed 4.5 by 6.5 inches.
  • Medically necessary bags and diaper bags accompanying a child receive an exception after inspection at a designated entrance. Other child-care items belong in a compliant clear bag.
  • Non-clear purses, backpacks, fanny packs, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, briefcases and coolers are prohibited.
  • Seat cushions and seatbacks may be no wider than 18 inches and may not have pockets or armrests. They cannot be carried inside another bag.
  • Umbrellas, outside food and drinks, glass or metal containers, artificial noisemakers, video cameras, tripods and strollers are prohibited. Strollers may be left at the owner's risk at Guest Services between Gates A and B.
  • Gates A, B, D and E serve general ticket holders; Gate C is for students. Walk-through metal detectors are used, gates open 90 minutes before kickoff and reentry is not allowed.
