A Guide to Lane Stadium

Lane Stadium turns the mountain town of Blacksburg into one of college football’s loudest stages. Virginia Tech’s 65,632-seat bowl concentrates sound between steep decks and enclosed ends, but everything builds toward one ritual: Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” the team touching Hokie Stone and tens of thousands jumping together. Hokie Village, the Corps of Cadets and mountain scenery make the anticipation as memorable as kickoff.

Getting to Lane Stadium

Lane Stadium is at 185 Beamer Way on Virginia Tech's south campus in Blacksburg. US 460 is the regional approach from Interstate 81, Roanoke and West Virginia. Blacksburg's local grid is small relative to the crowd, so a prepaid lot or free Blacksburg Transit plan is essential.

Driving & Parking

  • From Interstate 81
Use Exit 118 and US 460 west toward Blacksburg, then follow football signs to the permit or public lot rather than the stadium address.
  • From West Virginia
US 460 approaches from the west through Giles County; expect narrowing traffic as it reaches the bypass and Prices Fork Road.
  • Donor lots
Stadium-adjacent Lots 1, 2, 3 and 5 and other central areas are assigned through Hokie Scholarship Fund eligibility and season credentials.
  • Public campus parking
Virginia Tech sells game-day inventory in designated lots. All public campus lots became cashless in 2025, so arrive with a card or mobile payment.
  • Park-and-ride strategy
Choose an outlying legal area near a Blacksburg Transit route and ride free to the Transit Center rather than searching downtown streets.
  • RV parking
Duck Pond football RV inventory for 2026 is presold online. Additional credential RVs use Lot 3 or Duck Pond Overflow; airport spaces require separate arrangements.
  • Accessible parking
Day-of-game ADA parking is offered at Oak Lane through ParkMobile, with a required pass issued for accessible bus service to Gate 3.
  • Postgame routes
Police create one-way patterns around Southgate, Prices Fork, Main Street and US 460. The lot determines the exit direction, not the driver's preferred route.

Public Transit

  • Blacksburg Transit
BT is fare-free for every rider and runs expanded football service on scheduled routes.
  • Transit Center transfer
Most routes drop at the loops by Perry Street Garage. Transfer there to the Campus Shuttle for Cassell Coliseum near Lane Stadium.
  • Postgame return
Campus Shuttle buses leave Cassell for the Transit Center's Maroon Loop, where riders transfer to their neighborhood route.
  • Service window
Additional bus service generally begins three hours before kickoff; frequency and final service vary by game.
  • Christiansburg connection
Regional BT routes make lodging outside Blacksburg workable, but verify late-night service before relying on them.
  • Smart Way
The regional bus connects Blacksburg, Virginia Tech, Roanoke and the airport on a limited timetable; it is better for weekend travel than immediate postgame departure.
  • Walking campus
Downtown Blacksburg is about a mile from Lane. The Drillfield route is scenic and avoids the worst vehicle congestion.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • Follow the event map
Beamer Way and Southgate Drive are restricted near kickoff, so use the current designated zone rather than dropping a pin at Gate 1.
  • Downtown meeting point
Main Street is a manageable walk and often easier for drivers to reach after the game.
  • Wait out the surge
Downtown restaurants remain active after night games; eating first can save time and money while US 460 clears.
  • Limited supply
Blacksburg has fewer drivers than a large city. Reserve airport trips when possible and never assume an immediate late-night match.

Pregame Festivities

Hokie tailgating spreads across campus lots, the Drillfield, downtown and residential Center Street. The official center is Hokie Village on the turf field along Beamer Way, where families can join the scene without a private invitation. Two hours before kickoff, the team's arrival shifts attention toward Lane.

Tailgating

  • Hokie Village
The free fan fest offers food trucks, inflatables, music, sponsor displays and autograph appearances by other Virginia Tech teams.
  • Hokie Walk
Fans line Beamer Way two hours before kickoff as players and coaches walk from the buses toward the stadium.
  • Center Street
Student houses northeast of Lane create the loudest off-campus party. Visitors should expect dense crowds, limited access and active enforcement.
  • Chicken Hill
Lots and private spaces south of the stadium have a long tailgating history and an easy downhill approach to the gates.
  • Duck Pond lots
These western campus areas support established alumni and RV setups, followed by a walk or transit connection across campus.
  • Ag Quad
The agricultural side of campus offers another game-day transit and gathering landmark away from the immediate stadium crush.
  • Corps march-on
For selected games, the Corps of Cadets forms and proceeds toward Lane, linking football to Virginia Tech's senior military college identity.
  • Tent rules
Pop-up tents must come down when unattended during the game and cannot remain overnight; all equipment must leave by the published deadline.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • The Cellar
A below-street-level Blacksburg institution serving pizza, gyros and a strong beer list in a comfortable pub setting.
  • Close to campus, PK's is known for pizza, wings and the “Tijuana Toss,” with televisions and a reliable Hokie crowd.
  • Usually shortened to TOTS, this downtown student bar is famous for the sweet Rail cocktail and late-night lines.
  • Burgers, wings, beer and a patio make the Main Street sports bar a straightforward pregame meeting point.
  • Baja-style tacos and margaritas in a colorful downtown room provide a change from standard pub food.
  • Enormous pizza slices served on two plates make this the fast, inexpensive choice between downtown and campus.
  • A longtime vegetarian-friendly breakfast and lunch cafe, useful for early kickoffs and visitors avoiding the bar scene.
  • A contemporary downtown gastropub with Virginia beer and a more polished menu for Friday dinner.

Gameday Traditions

  • “Enter Sandman”
Metallica's opening riff triggers synchronized jumping as the Hokies charge through the north tunnel. Be in place at least 20 minutes early.
  • Hokie Stone touch
Players reach overhead to touch a stone marked “For those who have passed, for those to come—reach for excellence” before entering the field.
  • Johnny Cash buildup
“God's Gonna Cut You Down” darkens the atmosphere before the Sandman sequence and stadium chant.
  • Skipper cannon
The Corps of Cadets' cannon has fired for football scores and ceremonial moments since 1963. The blast surprises first-time visitors.
  • Highty-Tighties
The Corps regimental band performs military precision and joins the pregame traditions alongside the larger Marching Virginians.
  • Marching Virginians
The 350-member band plays “Tech Triumph,” leads “Hokie Pokie” and supplies the stadium's show-band energy.
  • Key play
Fans shake keys on defensive third downs, a reference to asking the opponent's offense, “Where are your keys?”
  • “Shout”
The Isley Brothers song energizes the crowd between the third and fourth quarters before the final-period push.

Monuments & Features

  • Hokie Stone exterior
Native gray limestone cladding matches Virginia Tech's Collegiate Gothic campus and gives later expansions a unified identity.
  • Tunnel stone
The team-touch slab at the north entrance is a memorial, motivational object and central part of the runout.
  • Worsham Field
The playing surface honors supporter Wes Worsham and uses an unusual modular natural-grass system.
  • GreenTech trays
Thousands of removable Bermuda-grass sections sit above an engineered asphalt and drainage base, allowing damaged areas to be replaced.
  • Beamer statue
A bronze Frank Beamer near the stadium honors the coach who transformed Virginia Tech football and popularized “Beamer Ball.”
  • April 16 Memorial
The memorial on the Drillfield honors the 32 victims of the 2007 campus shooting and merits a quiet, respectful visit.
  • Virginia Tech Athletics Hall of Fame
The west-side complex displays artifacts and honors figures across Hokie sports history.
  • Blue Ridge setting
At roughly 2,057 feet, Lane is surrounded by ridges, cool evening air and autumn color.

Seating & Sections

Lane's east and west decks rise steeply above a fully enclosed lower bowl. The south end contains club seating and suites, while the north end holds the videoboard and entrance tunnel. The vertical geometry keeps most seats close and turns upper-level noise back toward the field.

Afternoon sun is most direct on the east side; the larger west tower provides earlier shade and indoor premium options. Mesh chairbacks now cover roughly 32,000 locations, but confirm whether a ticket includes one because other rows remain bench-style or use rentable seats.

  • West sideline
Home-side seating beneath the suite and club tower receives shade first and offers excellent midfield angles.
  • East sideline
The steep upper deck supplies outstanding formation views at a lower price but can be hot and exposed.
  • South end zone
Close to the student atmosphere and Sandman view across the field, with premium clubs and suites above.
  • North end zone
Seats beside the team tunnel and HokieVision board feel the entrance at close range, though replay viewing may require turning.
  • Student sections
Standing, bouncing and sustained noise are the norm; this is the emotional engine of Lane rather than a relaxed viewing area.
  • Lane Lounge
Between Sections 110 and 112, this indoor premium room includes food, beverages, broadcasts and a private entrance through a separate pass.
  • West and south clubs
Multiple premium spaces combine padded seats, indoor hospitality and protected weather access.
  • Sandman Suites
On-field group spaces place guests beside the entrance experience, prioritizing proximity and spectacle over an elevated tactical view.

Concessions

Every Lane Stadium concession is cashless, accepting cards and Apple Pay or Google Pay. Recent menus balance inexpensive fan-friendly basics, regional barbecue and vegetarian choices. Alcohol is sold at designated locations with a two-drink limit per ID and transaction.

  • Mainstreet BBQ
Barbecue stands serve smoked-meat favorites and a newer BBQ jackfruit sandwich for vegetarian guests.
  • Eat Drink Taco
The south-concourse counter offers tacos, including a BBQ jackfruit version introduced in 2025.
  • Impossible Burgers
Vegetarian burgers are available on east and upper-east concourses.
  • Fan-friendly menu
Selected hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, nachos and drinks carry reduced prices compared with premium items.
  • Turkey legs and barbecue
Hearty smoked options fit the Southwest Virginia tailgate character and are among the building's most distinctive choices.
  • Portable beer stands
Lower-concourse positions near Sections 102, 113 and 134 plus Gates 3 and 6 expand beverage access.
  • Stadium standards
Pizza, chicken tenders, candy, soft drinks and bottled water remain available throughout the main concourses.
  • Payment planning
Lane has no ATMs and does not accept cash. Load a mobile wallet before arrival in case cellular demand slows apps.

Bag Policy

  • Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags may not exceed 12 by 6 by 12 inches; one-gallon clear freezer bags are also permitted.
  • One small clutch no larger than 4.5 by 1 by 6.5 inches, without a handle or strap, may accompany an approved clear bag.
  • Medically necessary items in clear bags receive an exception after inspection at the designated gate.
  • Diaper bags, purses, backpacks, fanny packs—including crossbody and belt styles—cinch bags, coolers, luggage, computer bags and camera bags are prohibited.
  • Seat cushions and strollers are prohibited. Oversize bags must be returned to the vehicle or discarded; unattended bags outside may be collected and destroyed.
  • Permitted factory-sealed nonalcoholic beverages are governed by the current A–Z list; outside alcohol, glass containers and opened drinks are prohibited.
  • All guests and possessions are screened. Leave unnecessary metal and bulky items behind to speed entry.
  • Lane Stadium is cashless and does not provide ATMs. Mobile tickets should be downloaded before arrival, and guests who leave are not ordinarily readmitted.
