A Guide to Gerald J. Ford Stadium
Gerald J. Ford Stadium gives SMU football a polished 33,200-seat home designed in the Georgian brick-and-limestone language of its University Park campus. A field sunk below grade keeps the neighborhood profile low, while the enclosed south end and modern premium spaces bring ACC-scale amenities. Game day begins on Bishop Boulevard, where Dallas style and college tailgating meet before the Mustangs take the field.
Getting to Gerald J. Ford Stadium
Ford Stadium stands at 5801 Bush Avenue on SMU's eastern edge, between Mockingbird Lane, Central Expressway and the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Residential University Park streets have strict parking and traffic controls. Navigate to the assigned lot, DART station or official rideshare zone.
Driving & Parking
- US 75/Central ExpresswayMockingbird Lane and SMU Boulevard provide the primary freeway approaches. Expect ramp backups before sellouts.
- Dallas North TollwayMockingbird Lane connects from the west through Highland Park, where neighborhood streets are narrow and regulated.
- Credential lotsBinkley, Hillcrest, Moody, Church and other campus areas are allocated through season tickets and Mustang Club giving levels.
- Single-game parkingInventory varies by opponent and should be purchased in advance through SMU's current map. Do not count on unrestricted neighborhood curb space.
- Boulevard spacesReserved tailgate plots are donor benefits separate from an ordinary vehicle stall and have their own access and setup rules.
- Accessible parkingADA spaces exist in cash and credential lots. Gate 2 permits accessible drop-off, and attendants can arrange on-campus golf carts.
- No RV parkingSMU explicitly prohibits game-day RV parking on campus. Arrange an off-site facility before entering University Park.
- Exit planningChoose the prescribed route from the lot rather than forcing a turn toward US 75; police controls may send traffic away from the preferred highway.
Public Transit
- DART railSMU/Mockingbird Station is served by the Red, Blue and Orange lines and is closer to Ford Stadium than many campus landmarks.
- Free SMU shuttleEvent buses connect the rail station and the corner of SMU Boulevard and Central Expressway with a campus stop between Moody Coliseum and Moody Garage.
- Walking from railThe route is manageable for most guests, though the shuttle is helpful in September heat or for limited mobility.
- Airport connectionsThe Orange Line reaches DFW Airport; Love Field requires a rail-bus connection. Check late-night schedules before relying on transit after a game.
- Accessible serviceDART rail and the SMU shuttle support accessible travel, while golf carts handle the final campus segment on request.
- Downtown DallasVisitors staying near Akard, St. Paul or Pearl/Arts District stations can reach SMU/Mockingbird without driving through University Park. Confirm the final Orange, Red or Blue Line departure for a night game.
- Park-and-rideDART provides free parking at many outlying stations. This is often easier than buying scarce campus inventory, especially for visitors approaching from Plano, Richardson or southern Dallas.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
- Official zoneSMU coordinates pickup and drop-off near the east-campus transit area by SMU Boulevard and Central Expressway.
- Avoid Bishop BoulevardThe Boulevard becomes the tailgate promenade and cannot function as a convenient rideshare lane.
- Postgame pickupWalk toward Mockingbird Station or another published east-campus point before requesting; residential curb pickups create congestion.
- Rail combinationRiding DART one or two stops away before calling a car can avoid University Park restrictions and surge pricing.
Pregame Festivities
“The Boulevard” is SMU's signature. Tents, catered spreads, chandeliers, television setups and students fill Bishop Boulevard under live oaks, creating a scene closer to an outdoor Dallas reception than a conventional parking-lot tailgate. Mustang Walk and the Armstrong Fieldhouse Fan Zone provide public focal points before the crowd moves east into Ford.

Seating & Sections
Ford has a compact lower bowl, upper sideline sections, a west press and suite tower and the new premium south end. The sun is a major variable: west-side seats receive shade earlier, while the east side can bake during afternoon kickoffs.
Because the field is below grade, entry from the north and side plazas places many guests near the top of the lower bowl rather than at field level. That unusual geometry shortens the apparent climb and keeps concourse circulation close to the seating portals.
- West sidelineHome-side seating beneath the press tower offers the earliest shade and excellent midfield angles.
- East sidelineThese sections face the SMU bench and west tower but receive direct afternoon sun.
- North endSeats near Doak Walker Plaza and the student entrance sit close to the videoboard and traditional campus approach.
- Weber south endNew club, suite and loge products connect directly to the Armstrong Football Center and hospitality level.
- 2026 east cabanasSocial boxes add shade and group seating on the east side for guests prioritizing comfort over traditional rows.
- 2026 west logesTerrace loges include premium amenities and access to the Weber complex.
- Student sectionsStudents create the most standing-heavy environment and arrive from Boulevard festivities shortly before kickoff.
- Accessible seatingPlatforms sit at the top of the lower level; Gate 2 drop-off and golf carts support the route.
