A Guide to Snapdragon Stadium

Snapdragon Stadium gives San Diego State football a 35,000-seat home built around open air, natural grass and the flavors of local restaurants. Opened in 2022 on the former San Diego Stadium site, the venue anchors the growing SDSU Mission Valley district. Strong sightlines, Warrior Walk, Aztec Village and easy trolley access create a modern San Diego game day, while bright afternoon sun reminds visitors this is Southern California football.

Getting to Snapdragon Stadium

Snapdragon Stadium stands at 2101 Stadium Way, north of I-8 and west of I-15. Friars Road, Mission Village Drive, San Diego Mission Road and Rancho Mission Road become controlled approaches on event days.

Driving & Parking

  • Driving
From coastal San Diego, use I-8 east; from North County, approach on I-15 south; from downtown or South Bay, I-5 and CA-163 connect to I-8. Follow the route printed on the parking pass rather than a navigation app's final turn because each lot has a designated gate.
  • Lot entrances
Thrive Park and Yellow traffic uses Gate 5 from Friars Road at River Park Road. Green uses Gate 1 from Mission Village Drive; Purple uses Gates 1 or 2 from San Diego Mission Road; Orange uses Gates 1, 2 or 3 from Rancho Mission Road.
  • Advance purchase
Every vehicle needs a valid pass. Drive-up inventory may be unavailable and cost more; Fenton Marketplace, nearby businesses and residential streets prohibit event parking. Download the pass before joining the queue.
  • Hours
SDSU football lots open five hours before kickoff and generally close one hour after the event. Overnight parking is prohibited. A permit covers one vehicle and one space; attendants assign positions, so friends should arrive together if they hope to park together.
  • Overflow and accessible parking
SDSU main-campus structures P3 and P4 provide a park-and-ride option via the trolley. Paid ADA stalls are first-come, with the Green Lot serving as the primary accessible area; a valid placard and parking payment or pass are required.

Public Transit

  • Green Line trolley
MTS Stadium Station is steps from the venue. Green Line trains connect Santee, El Cajon, La Mesa, SDSU, Mission Valley, Old Town and downtown, normally running every 15 minutes or better around major events.
  • Blue Line connection
Riders from San Ysidro, Chula Vista, National City, Clairemont, La Jolla and UTC can take the Blue Line to Old Town Transit Center and transfer to a Green Line train for Stadium Station.
  • Fare
An adult round trip is $5. Load the PRONTO app or card before travel, or tap a distinct contactless bank card or device for each rider. A physical PRONTO card purchased from a machine carries an additional card charge.
  • Park and ride
Several trolley stations have free parking. Check MTS event guidance because availability changes by game.
  • Postgame
Validate or tap before boarding, including at the validators on the ramps and platforms after the game. Let the first crush clear if traveling with children or someone who needs extra boarding time.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • The official drop-off and pickup corridor is northbound Mission Village Drive between Friars Road and Jacaranda Street, just north of the stadium. Do not set the pin at a stadium gate or neighboring retail property.
  • After the game, reach the designated corridor before requesting a car. Expect closures and surge pricing; follow police directions.

Pregame Festivities

The best pregame route runs through the east and south sides of the grounds. Aztec Village and organized River Park experiences supply entertainment for visitors who do not own a tailgate setup, while the Warrior Walk brings the team, band and spirit squads through the crowd.

Tailgating

  • Parking-lot tailgates
Tailgating is permitted directly behind a parked vehicle, never in an adjacent stall, drive aisle, sidewalk or fire lane. Buying extra parking permits solely to enlarge a setup is prohibited.
  • Timing
Lots open five hours before kickoff. Stadium gates open two hours before kickoff, so begin packing early enough to clear grills and equipment without missing the pregame show.
  • Tents and cooking
Temporary pop-up tents are allowed but cannot be staked or attached to poles or stadium property. Natural-gas and propane grills are permitted; charcoal, wood, oil fryers and open fires are not.
  • Equipment
Generators rated at 600 watts or less are allowed if cords create no hazard. Amplified systems, fireworks and unlicensed motorized devices are prohibited; SDSU is smoke-free.
  • Aztec Village
The free public fan area opens three hours before kickoff on Victory Drive and closes 30 minutes before kickoff. Programming varies by game.
  • Organized packages
SDSU has recently offered full-service tailgates and reserved grass footprints around River Park and the Warrior Walk. Inventory, providers and exact locations are season-sensitive, so confirm the current game's offer before purchasing.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • McGregor's Bar & Grill
At 10475 San Diego Mission Road, this long-running sports bar is close to the stadium area and serves burgers, sandwiches and late-night drinks. It is practical before a night game, but do not leave a vehicle there for stadium parking.
  • The Mission Valley location at Fenton Marketplace provides pizza, beer and a family-friendly television setup near a trolley stop. Retail parking is not event parking, so pair the meal with transit or move the car legally.
  • Its restaurants and patios form the broadest pregame district on the Green Line. Eat there and board at Old Town Transit Center.
  • Aztec Village and River Park
Food trucks and beverage service often accompany the official pregame programming. Check the game-specific schedule because the lineup changes, but this is the closest no-reservation option.

Gameday Traditions

  • Warrior Walk
The team exits its buses and walks toward the stadium through the pregame crowd, accompanied by SDSU's band and spirit squads. The time varies by kickoff, so consult that game's itinerary and arrive well before gates open.
  • Honor Warrior
A distinguished former Aztec or community figure serves as Honor Warrior and participates in the pregame ceremony, connecting the current team with program history.
  • Warrior Shield
The team carries its ceremonial shield at home and on the road. Captains traditionally raise it during the fight song after an Aztec victory.
  • Aztec Marching Band
The band, cheerleaders and dance team animate the Warrior Walk and the stadium's pregame sequence. Be seated before introductions to see the full field entrance rather than arriving at kickoff.
  • Night football
San Diego State's Mission Valley identity was built during the Don Coryell era, when evening games and dark uniforms became part of the program's character. A sunset kickoff remains the most atmospheric way to see this open bowl.

Monuments & Features

  • Bashor Field
The natural-grass playing surface honors Dianne Bashor, whose $15 million lead gift supported the stadium project. The field sits close to the lower bowl, producing clean views without the old venue's multipurpose distance.
  • Sycuan Piers
Three elevated, multilevel social decks rise above the bowl and hold roughly 500 guests. They are among Snapdragon's most recognizable design elements and create standing-room-style views distinct from conventional club seats.
  • Permeable concourses
Landscaped open-air circulation and native planting express the San Diego setting. The building earned LEED Gold certification in 2023.
  • The old Mission Valley site
Snapdragon occupies ground associated with San Diego Stadium, Jack Murphy Stadium, Qualcomm Stadium and SDCCU Stadium. The setting preserves the Aztecs' geographic continuity even though the building is entirely new.
  • 386 Hospitality
The concession operator's name commemorates Marshall Faulk's then-NCAA-record 386 rushing yards and seven touchdowns against Pacific on this site in 1991.

History & Notable Moments

  • Groundbreaking (2020)
SDSU broke ground on August 17, beginning the first major component of its 166-acre Mission Valley campus.
  • Opening game (2022)
Arizona defeated San Diego State 38-20 on September 3 before 34,046 in the stadium's first official football game.
  • NWSL record (2022)
San Diego Wave beat Angel City 1-0 before 32,000 on September 17, immediately demonstrating the venue's multipurpose role.
  • W Gold Cup final (2024)
The United States defeated Brazil 1-0 before 31,528 to win the inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup.
  • Holiday Bowl arrival (2024)
Syracuse's 52-35 win over Washington State brought San Diego's long-running bowl game to Snapdragon for the first time.
  • San Diego FC debut (2025)
The MLS club's first home match drew a venue sporting-event record 34,506 against St. Louis City SC.

Seating & Sections

Snapdragon has lower, club and upper levels, with most premium spaces on the west. Because the venue is uncovered, consider sun angle as seriously as yard line; west-side seats help in the afternoon.

  • Lower bowl
The 100-level sections offer the closest football sightlines. End-zone seats feel especially near the action, though sideline sections give the clearest view of formations.
  • Student section
Approximately 5,000 seats are assigned to SDSU students, including about 2,900 safe-standing positions. Expect the loudest, most continuously standing portion of the bowl.
  • Club and premium areas
The Founders Club, Cox Business Club, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Club and Dos Equis Club combine upgraded seating with indoor or shaded hospitality. Access depends on the ticket, not simply the section entrance.
  • Sycuan Piers
These social decks favor movement and group interaction over a traditional assigned-seat experience. Confirm the specific hospitality terms attached to a ticket.
  • Accessible seating
Wheelchair and companion locations span the 100, club and 300 levels. All public gates are accessible, and complimentary escorts are available.
  • Upper level
The 300s provide the best value and broadest tactical view. Guest Services behind Section 328, nearby first aid and parent-room resources make that area more practical than its elevation suggests.

Concessions

Snapdragon is cashless: use credit, debit or gift cards, or convert cash at reverse ATMs near the southeast and northeast entries. The stadium app supports mobile ordering at participating stands, although availability varies by event.

  • The Taco Stand and Empanada Kitchen
Handmade tacos and Argentine-style empanadas give the concourse a strong regional identity.
  • Hodad's and The Crack Shack
The local burger institution and fried-chicken specialist are familiar San Diego names suited to a substantial stadium meal.
  • Cali BBQ and Cardiff tri-tip
Slow-cooked barbecue and Seaside Market's Cardiff tri-tip cover the venue's signature meat options.
  • The Fish Shop and Shawarma Guys
Fish, poke and chips sit alongside chicken or Australian Wagyu shawarma, broadening the menu beyond football standards.
  • Gaglione Bros and The Girls Deli
Cheesesteaks, subs and deli sandwiches are portable choices.
  • Batch & Box and Lemonade Orchard
Cookies and lemonade provide the easiest sweet finish. Vendor locations and mobile-order participation should be checked in the app on game day.

Bag Policy

  • Each guest may bring one clear plastic or clear vinyl bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or one one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag.
  • A small purse, bag or clutch no larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches may be non-clear. Larger purses, backpacks, coolers, briefcases, luggage and computer bags are prohibited.
  • Exceptions apply for medically necessary items and guests caring for young children, but those items are subject to inspection. Arrive early and identify the appropriate screening line.
  • Paid bag-check lockers are normally available outside the stadium on the east or southeast side near Innovation Parkway; availability can vary by event.
  • Sealed, unfrozen water bottles and empty refillable bottles no larger than 32 ounces are allowed for standard events. Outside food is prohibited except for documented medical needs or individual food-allergy accommodation.
  • Mobile tickets are the only standard entry method, gates open two hours before Aztec football, and re-entry is not permitted. Download tickets to the phone wallet before approaching the five public entrances.
