A Guide to Merlin Olsen Field At Maverik Stadium

Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium gives Utah State football a compact, mountain-framed home in Logan. The 25,513-seat bowl sits 4,710 feet above sea level at the mouth of Logan Canyon, with the Bear River Mountains beyond the east stands. A loud Hurd student section, “The Scotsman” and rapidly changing high-country weather give the Aggies a game day as distinctive as the scenery.

Getting to Merlin Olsen Field At Maverik Stadium

The stadium is at 1000 North and 800 East on Utah State's Logan campus. US 89/91 reaches Logan from Brigham City and I-15, while US 89 approaches from Bear Lake through Logan Canyon. Once in town, 400 North, 1000 North, 1200 East and 1400 North distribute traffic around campus.

Driving & Parking

  • Approach early
The final mile is the challenge. Utah State closes 800 East between the West Stadium Center entrance and Aggie Village about four hours before kickoff, then closes 1000 North between the west-lot entrances about two hours before kickoff.
  • Lot routes
A Lot uses 800 East or 1000 North; B Lot uses 800 East; C Lot uses 1400 North; D Lot is best reached from 1200 East; E Lots use Aggie Boulevard or 1200 East; and F Lots use 1400 North or 1200 East. Follow the current pass and traffic officers.
  • Single-game parking
Utah State most recently sold cashless F Lot passes in advance and at the entrance, with advance purchase cheaper. Because price and inventory are season-sensitive, buy through the current football parking portal rather than relying on a prior rate.
  • Reserved and ADA parking
Close stadium inventory is tied to passes and donor seating. Accessible parking is available in the west lot near the South Ticket Office and in B Lot; display the required placard and arrange the parking product before arrival.
  • RV parking
Game-day RV spaces require advance purchase through USU Parking or Event Services. Do not assume an oversize vehicle can enter a standard lot after road controls begin.

Public Transit

  • Cache Valley Transit District
CVTD operates fare-free bus service across Logan and the valley, including routes serving Utah State. Weekend frequency and football detours vary, so use its live planner for the game date.
  • Campus walking
Parking farther west or south and walking uphill is often easier than joining the 800 East queue. The grade is noticeable at elevation, particularly for guests arriving from lower elevations.
  • Regional arrival
Salt Lake City International Airport is roughly 90 miles south. Intercity shuttle options can reach Logan, but local game-day movement still requires a hotel shuttle, rideshare, bus or walk.
  • Accessible planning
The stadium's hillside setting makes an improvised long walk difficult. Guests who need step-free travel should pair accessible seating with an advance parking arrangement through the ticket office.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • Utah State does not publish a permanent football rideshare zone in its standing guide. Use the drop-off point in the current parking map and follow police instructions; 800 East and 1000 North closures make the stadium address a poor pin near kickoff.
  • After the game, walk beyond the controlled perimeter before requesting a car. A campus landmark west of the stadium is easier for drivers to reach than a closed stadium gate.

Pregame Festivities

Utah State's pregame is centered on campus lots rather than a commercial entertainment district. The authorized tailgate lot creates the main gathering place, while Aggie Ice Cream and the walk through campus add a distinctly Logan itinerary.

Tailgating

  • Authorized area
Tailgating is confined to the designated athletics tailgate lot. A standard parking space elsewhere does not authorize a party setup.
  • Hours
The standing policy opens the tailgate lot at 8 a.m. for Saturday games and 2 p.m. for weeknight games. The specific event notice controls if weather, construction or kickoff timing produces a change.
  • Passes
Season spaces require a qualifying Big Blue Club or priority-seating contribution plus a space fee. Single-game inventory is handled by Utah State Athletics after its announced on-sale date.
  • Footprint and cleanup
Keep tents, grills, tables and guests within the purchased area and maintain fire lanes. Pack completely before entering because stadium re-entry is prohibited.
  • Weather and fire
Cache Valley can be hot, windy, wet or snowy during one football season. Use weighted shelter, follow current fire restrictions and never bring a personal propane heater into the stadium.
  • No Aggie Walk assumption
Utah State discontinued Aggie Walk for the 2025 season. Do not wait along an old route unless the current game itinerary explicitly announces its return.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • The university creamery at 750 North 1200 East is a short walk southeast of the stadium and has made ice cream on campus for more than a century. Check football-Saturday hours and expect a line.
  • This breakfast-and-lunch spot at 1435 Canyon Road serves skillets, stuffed French toast, burgers and scratch-made comfort food. It closes in the afternoon, making it best for an early start.
  • Beehive Pub & Grill
At 255 South Main Street downtown, Beehive offers burgers, wings, local-style comfort food and drinks. It works well for visitors staying downtown before taking transit or rideshare uphill.
  • Downtown Logan
Main and Center streets provide more pregame choices than the immediate stadium edge. Eat early, then move the car legally or use a bus rather than expecting restaurant parking to serve as event parking.

Gameday Traditions

  • The Scotsman
Aggie fans sing the unofficial fight song while performing coordinated arm and body motions. Watch the Hurd once, then join the repeated verse about the “spot where the sagebrush grows.”
  • Hail the Utah Aggies
The official fight song closes with the “Utah State, hey—Aggies all the way” chant. The band and student section make it easiest to learn during pregame.
  • I Believe
The call builds one phrase at a time—“I believe,” “I believe that,” and onward—until the crowd declares that the Aggies will win.
  • The Hurd
Utah State's student section supplies the stadium's most constant motion and noise. Student areas are general admission, so they fill early for rivalry and conference games.
  • Big Blue
The blue bull mascot works the sideline and student section with the spirit squad, continuing the agricultural identity behind the Aggies name.
  • Show Me
Utah State's 2026 athletics initiative draws its language from “The Scotsman” and gives the familiar song a new department-wide role as the Aggies enter the Pac-12.

Monuments & Features

  • Merlin Olsen statue
Blair Buswell's larger-than-life bronze stands outside the south entrance. Unveiled in 2010, it portrays the Logan native, Utah State All-American and Pro and College Football Hall of Famer.
  • Mountain setting
The east side opens toward the Bear River Mountains, making upper west-side seats the best panoramic viewpoint. Sunset and early snow can turn the landscape into part of the show.
  • West Stadium Center
The five-story 2016 structure contains suites, loge boxes, club seating, media operations and the Champions Club, replacing the old west press facility with the stadium's modern face.
  • Southeast event deck
The 2023 hillside project relieved a circulation bottleneck while adding restrooms, accessible seating and a rooftop social deck with an elevated view.
  • Community-built south bowl
Volunteers added 10,000 seats in 1980, a physical reminder of local investment in Aggie football.

History & Notable Moments

  • Opening victory (1968)
Utah State defeated New Mexico State 28-12 on September 14 in the first game at the new stadium.
  • Romney dedication (1969)
The venue was formally named for E. Lowell “Dick” Romney, Utah State's winningest football coach and a former athletics director.
  • Attendance record (1996)
A crowd of 33,119 packed the expanded configuration for the BYU rivalry game.
  • Merlin Olsen Field (2009)
Utah State named the playing surface for its legendary defensive lineman before adding the statue the following year.
  • Utah upset (2012)
The Aggies defeated Utah 27-20 in overtime before a sellout, ending a 12-game series losing streak.
  • West-side reopening (2016)
Utah State beat Weber State 45-6 in the first game with the completed West Stadium Center.

Seating & Sections

The field runs north-south, with the premium West Stadium Center on one sideline, a tall general bowl to the east, the expanded south end and football operations at the north. The venue is uncovered; choose the west for mountain views and premium shelter, or the east for a view of the modern west facade.

  • West club level
More than 700 covered club seats connect to the Champions Club. Access, food and hospitality depend on the ticket product.
  • Suites and loge boxes
Twenty suites and 20 loge boxes occupy the west structure, giving groups an indoor-outdoor option in late-season weather.
  • East stands
The upper east concourse has additional concessions and broad field views. It can receive strong afternoon sun before temperatures fall after sunset.
  • South bowl
This community-built end anchors the Merlin Olsen statue and South Ticket Office approach. End-zone seats are close to scoring plays and the south video display.
  • Accessible seating
Reserved wheelchair locations are in west Sections 100-107, east behind Section 117 and near Section 217, generally with one companion seat. Request them in advance; same-day exchanges depend on availability.
  • Chair backs
Rentals are available behind Section 112. Personal chair backs may enter if they do not exceed 18 inches in width or depth.

Concessions

Utah State Dining Services operates concessions on the south concourse, beneath the West Stadium Center and on the upper east concourse. The permanent guide does not promise an exact brand lineup, so use the game-specific map for current locations.

  • Stadium staples
Main stands provide hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, candy and soft drinks, with the broadest clusters under the west center and along the south concourse.
  • Swig
Utah's dirty-soda specialist operated two stadium locations in the latest season-specific plan, one on the south concourse and another near the east stands.
  • Chester's Chicken
The latest published football sheet placed Chester's near the southwest concession stand, offering a more substantial meal than snack counters.
  • Water stations
Filling points are on the south concourse and inside the West Stadium Center; drinking fountains are near Sections 101, 106, 115 and 218.
  • Alcohol-free venue
Alcohol is prohibited inside Maverik Stadium. Tailgate consumption does not create an exception at the gate.

Bag Policy

  • Each fan may bring one clear bag no larger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches, or one one-gallon clear plastic storage bag.
  • A small clutch or purse no larger than 6.5 by 4.5 inches may accompany the clear bag. All items must fit beneath the seat and remain out of aisles.
  • Diaper and medical bags are permitted after inspection, but the standing guide directs those bags to Gates B and E.
  • Hard-sided bags, suitcases, coolers and similar containers are prohibited. Umbrellas, strollers, oversized chairs and outside food are also barred; stroller parking is outside the north and south gates at the owner's risk.
  • One factory-sealed, unfrozen water bottle of one liter or less is allowed per person. An empty personal bottle of one liter or less is also allowed, but glass and aluminum containers are not.
  • Gates normally open 90 minutes before kickoff. Mobile tickets should be saved before arrival, and the stadium does not permit re-entry except for an extraordinary circumstance approved by command staff.
