A Guide to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium

Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium presents college football as ceremony and remembrance in Annapolis. Battle names ring the façade, thousands of plaques honor ships and service members and the Brigade of Midshipmen marches onto Jack Stephens Field before kickoff. The intimate blue-and-gold grandstands, NavyFest and the closing of “The Blue and Gold” connect every game to the Naval Academy community whether the Midshipmen win or lose.

Getting to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium

The stadium sits west of downtown Annapolis near the US 50/Rowe Boulevard interchange. Drivers from Baltimore use I-97 and US 50; Washington visitors follow US 50 east; Eastern Shore traffic crosses the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and exits at Rowe Boulevard. Farragut Road serves northern gates, while Taylor Avenue reaches Gates 5–7.

Driving & Parking

  • Stadium lots
Blue and Gold lots are season-permit inventory and are not sold on game day. The 2025 template priced season parking at $255 for a regular vehicle, but verify the 2026 product rather than treating that rate as current.
  • Lot opening
The latest full guide opened stadium lots at 7 a.m. for noon kickoffs and 9:30 a.m. for 3:30 games. Lots closed 90 minutes after “The Blue and Gold.”
  • Harry S. Truman Park & Ride
The satellite lot on Harry S. Truman Parkway off Riva Road is the easiest public plan. Shuttles begin five hours before kickoff, run about every 20 minutes and continue until roughly two hours after the game.
  • Germantown Elementary
The school at 200 Windell Road provides close auxiliary parking. The latest guide listed $25 for cars and $65 for oversized vehicles, cash only; confirm price and availability for 2026.
  • Downtown garages
Bladen Street, Gotts Court, Park Place and Whitmore garages provide alternatives that pair well with an Annapolis meal. Expect a 15- to 30-minute walk depending on the facility and crowd.
  • Accessible parking
Stadium spaces require both a purchased permit and state placard or plate, with entry from Farragut Road. Reserve early; accessible shuttles also operate from Truman and Germantown.
  • RVs and buses
Oversized stadium permits use the north end through Gate 1 on Farragut Road. Trailers require perimeter space and advance coordination with Navy Athletics.
  • Neighborhood respect
Do not block driveways or improvise parking on residential streets. Navy explicitly asks guests to protect its relationship with stadium neighbors.

Public Transit

  • No rail station
Annapolis has no passenger rail. Travelers from Washington can connect by bus from New Carrollton; Baltimore visitors often arrive through BWI and complete the trip by bus, rental car or rideshare.
  • Truman shuttle
This is the primary event transit even for drivers. It drops at the north-side Navy Ticket Office and includes accessible vehicles.
  • Downtown circulator
Annapolis transit and circulator services can help between garages, downtown and West Street, but football detours and Taylor Avenue closure affect the route. Check the city timetable on game morning.
  • March-on closure
Taylor Avenue closes from Rowe Boulevard to Gate 5 for the Brigade's march-on 30 minutes before kickoff. Any bus or walking plan that crosses it must arrive earlier.
  • Academy visit
Public entry to the Yard uses its own security and identification rules. A stadium ticket does not bypass the visitor process, so tour separately and leave time to reach the game.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • Choose a perimeter point
Taylor Avenue and the stadium loop become difficult near the march-on. Arrange the drop on an open side street or at a downtown landmark outside closures.
  • Pregame pairing
A morning drop near City Dock allows breakfast and a Yard visit before walking west or taking local transit toward the stadium.
  • Do not stop on Rowe Boulevard
Fast traffic and event controls make it unsafe for loading. Use a legal curb and exact address.
  • Postgame pickup
Walk toward West Street, Park Place or another open commercial area before requesting. The stadium frontage is crowded with shuttles and permit traffic.
  • Late connection
Annapolis driver supply is thinner than Washington or Baltimore. Reserve airport and rail-station transfers, especially after a night kickoff.

Pregame Festivities

Navy tailgating is orderly but deeply social: academy class reunions, active-duty groups, families and civilian fans gather around the stadium's Blue and Gold lots. NavyFest provides a public focal point, and the march-on creates a hard deadline for moving inside.

Tailgating

  • NavyFest
The public fan area outside the stadium features sponsor displays, food, merchandise and family activities. Its exact location and schedule are published with the game guide.
  • Perimeter tailgates
Roughly 70 large areas around the stadium are reserved for academy classes, midshipmen families and civilian groups, typically fitting a 20-by-20-foot tent within a larger footprint.
  • Blue and Gold lots
Permit holders may tailgate at the vehicle without consuming another stall. Groups should arrive together because saving spaces is prohibited.
  • Tent limits
Ordinary pop-ups may not exceed 10 by 10 feet except in designated perimeter and NavyFest areas arranged through Navy Athletics.
  • Grills
Small gas grills and covered charcoal grills are allowed; open bonfires and campfires are prohibited by federal, state and city rules.
  • Class gatherings
Look for signs identifying Naval Academy graduating years. These alumni tents give the parking field a reunion atmosphere unlike a conventional booster lot.
  • Timing
Move toward the gates well before the 30-minute march-on. Security lines plus the Taylor Avenue closure can make a last-minute dash fail.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • The historic West Street pub serves crab dip, burgers, beer and tavern plates, and its interior courtyard works well before the walk toward the stadium.
  • A City Dock institution with oysters, seafood and Navy connections, ideal for a Friday night or early lunch before joining the crowd.
  • The Maryland Avenue Irish pub offers shepherd's pie, fish and chips, whiskey and a calmer alternative to the waterfront's busiest rooms.
  • Across Spa Creek in Eastport, this neighborhood bar is known for crab pretzels, sandwiches and local character. It is better before driving to satellite parking than as a quick stadium walk.
  • Also in Eastport, Boatyard leans into Chesapeake seafood and sailing culture with crab cakes, fish tacos and a lively bar.
  • Near City Dock, the all-day breakfast menu and hearty comfort food make it useful before a noon kickoff.
  • The narrow Main Street landmark serves oversized breakfasts, sandwiches and milkshakes in a proudly Annapolis setting; expect a line on football mornings.

Gameday Traditions

  • Brigade march-on
The Midshipmen march in formation onto the field 30 minutes before kickoff. Be seated early enough to see the full geometry rather than hearing it from the concourse.
  • Flyover
Selected games feature Navy aircraft timed to the anthem or pregame ceremony. Mission and weather requirements can change the aircraft or cancel it.
  • Bill the Goat
Navy's costumed mascot represents the live-goat tradition that dates to the nineteenth century and works the sideline and crowd throughout the game.
  • “Anchors Aweigh”
The Naval Academy fight song drives scoring celebrations and the Brigade's response from the stands.
  • “The Blue and Gold”
Players and Midshipmen gather for the alma mater after the game. Visitors should remain respectfully through both teams' acknowledgments.
  • Don't Give Up the Ship
The famous Perry battle flag and phrase appear throughout Navy football, connecting the team's identity with naval history.
  • Pushups
Midshipmen perform pushups after Navy scores, matching the running point total in a service-academy variation on a familiar college tradition.
  • Service recognition
Sailors, Marines, veterans and notable units are honored throughout the presentation, making military history part of the event rather than decorative backdrop.

Monuments & Features

  • Battle names
Names of Navy and Marine Corps actions encircle the upper rim, turning the stadium itself into an open-air service memorial.
  • Memorial plaques
Thousands of individually dedicated plaques honor ships, squadrons, units and people throughout the structure. Read them slowly rather than treating the concourse as merely a passage.
  • Blue Angel aircraft
A retired Blue Angels jet stands near the north ticket-office area as a prominent meeting point and photo stop.
  • Jack Stephens Field
The playing surface was named in 2003 for Jackson T. Stephens, a former Midshipman and major supporter of the stadium renovation.
  • Memorial Plaza
The north-end open area gathers ticketing, remembrance elements and circulation beneath the stadium's service identity.
  • Blue and Gold symmetry
The west press-box side is traditionally Blue and the east side Gold, simplifying navigation through the two sweeping grandstands.
  • The Yard nearby
Bancroft Hall, the Chapel, Tecumseh Court and the crypt of John Paul Jones are about a mile away inside the Naval Academy, subject to visitor access rules.

History & Notable Moments

  • First game (1959)
Navy defeated William & Mary 29–2 before 25,000 spectators in the dedication game for the privately financed memorial stadium.
  • Stephens Field dedication (2003)
Navy named the field during the multiyear $56 million renovation that reshaped the stadium through 2005.
  • Air Force thriller (2005)
Navy won 27–24 on a 46-yard field goal with four-tenths of a second remaining.
  • Military Bowl arrives (2013)
Marshall defeated Maryland 31–20 in the first edition of the bowl played in Annapolis.
  • Houston upset (2016)
Navy beat No. 6 Houston 46–40 for its first victory over a top-10 opponent since 1984.
  • Record Air Force crowd (2017)
    A then-record 38,792 watched Navy defeat Air Force 48–45.
  • NHL outdoors (2018)
The Washington Capitals beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5–2 in a Stadium Series game that transformed the football field into an ice rink.

Seating & Sections

Jack Stephens Field runs north–south. The west grandstand is the Blue side and contains the press box; the east grandstand is Gold. Both are relatively low and close, so most seats offer a clean view. Afternoon sun favors the west side first, while upper rows expose guests to Chesapeake wind.

  • Blue side
West-sideline seats provide the best chance of late-day shade and proximity to the press-box and club structures.
  • Gold side
East-sideline seats face the Blue grandstand and take more direct afternoon sun, but put the Brigade's blue-and-gold contrast on full display.
  • Lower sideline
Close rows feel intimate but can lose perspective behind benches. Mid-level rows near the 30- to 50-yard lines balance proximity and angle.
  • End zones
North and south seats are often the best value and remain close to the field, though action at the far goal line flattens.
  • Brigade seating
Midshipmen stand together and participate continuously. Nearby sections deliver peak atmosphere but should not be chosen by guests expecting a quiet, seated experience.
  • Akerson Tower clubs
Suites and club areas on the Blue side provide indoor hospitality, elevated views and weather protection; exact food and drink inclusions depend on the credential.
  • East club and boxes
Gold-side premium inventory includes club seating and upper boxes with a different perspective toward the west tower.
  • Accessible seating
Platforms are available throughout the upper portions of the lower Blue and Gold levels. Arrange early through the ticket office because game-day exchanges depend on availability.

Concessions

Navy's concourses mix national stadium staples with recognizable Annapolis and Maryland vendors. All permanent concessions are inside the gates, which open two hours before kickoff; portable restrooms but not food stands are available outside.

  • Annapolis Ice Cream Company
Local ice cream brings a downtown favorite into the football setting.
  • Fisher's Popcorn
The Ocean City brand serves caramel popcorn and other sweet varieties familiar across Maryland's shore communities.
  • Ledo Pizza
Square Maryland-style pizza offers a portable slice with a thin crust and sweet sauce.
  • Chick-fil-A
Chicken sandwiches provide a familiar fast-moving option, subject to game and day of week.
  • Picante
Mexican-inspired concessions broaden the menu beyond hot dogs and burgers.
  • Nothing Bundt Cakes
Individual cakes and sweets appear among the current vendor lineup.
  • Sodexo and Pepsi stands
Core stands carry hot dogs, sausages, snacks, soft drinks and water around the Blue and Gold concourses.
  • Alcohol
Beer and other alcohol purchased inside may be consumed within the gates; outside alcohol cannot enter, although lawful possession is permitted in tailgate areas.

Bag Policy

  • Clear bags no larger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches are permitted. Note Navy's dimension order differs from the more common 12-by-6-by-12 format but describes the same rectangular volume.
  • One small clutch no larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches is allowed. Every bag, including a purse or diaper bag, is subject to inspection.
  • Navy permits diaper bags, blankets, seat cushions, umbrella strollers and consumer video cameras under its latest guide.
  • Backpacks, ordinary purses, fanny packs, briefcases, computer bags, totes, binocular and camera cases, coolers and large bags are prohibited.
  • Bottles, cans, thermoses, outside food and drink, folding chairs, umbrellas, professional cameras, tripods and artificial noisemakers are prohibited.
  • A bag-check tent operates outside the stadium's northwest corner for noncompliant bags, but leaving unnecessary items at the hotel or car remains faster.
  • Gates open two hours before kickoff, and enhanced security may lengthen entry. Be inside before the march-on begins 30 minutes before kickoff.
  • Re-entry is unavailable before halftime. After halftime, a guest must scan out and back in with a valid ticket and may exit only once.
