A Guide to Mountain America Stadium

Mountain America Stadium rises between two buttes in Tempe, giving Arizona State football a dramatic 53,599-seat desert home. Known for decades as Sun Devil Stadium and nicknamed the “House of Heat,” the steep bowl combines Frank Kush Field with punishing early-season temperatures. Mill Avenue, the Sun Devil Walk, Pat Tillman’s statue and sunset over the surrounding rock create one of the Southwest’s most recognizable game days.

Getting to Mountain America Stadium

The stadium address is 500 East Veterans Way, immediately northeast of Arizona State’s Tempe campus. Rio Salado Parkway and Tempe Town Lake lie to the north, University Drive to the south, Rural Road to the east and downtown Tempe to the west. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is only about six miles away, but traffic controls and the railroad divide the approaches. Decide whether to park north or south before leaving; trying to cross the stadium district late is frustrating.

Driving & Parking

  • From Scottsdale or north Phoenix
Take Loop 101 south or McClintock Drive south. Use Rio Salado Parkway for north-side lots; use University Drive for Novus, Fulton Center or Stadium Structure parking south of the venue.
  • From Chandler or Gilbert
Use Loop 101 north and make the same north-versus-south choice early. Rural Road becomes heavily congested near the lake and arena complex.
  • From Mesa and the East Valley
Take US-60 west to Loop 101 north. Exit at University Drive for south-side structures, or continue via University/Rural toward Rio Salado for north inventory.
  • From Phoenix and the west
Interstate 10 to Loop 202 east is the cleanest regional route. Approach downtown or south-campus parking from Priest Drive or Mill Avenue rather than circling through Rural Road.
  • Single-game parking
General-event options include the Novus, Stadium, Packard and University Center structures plus designated Gray, Black, Gammage and Copper areas. Current general lots are advertised at $20 and typically open five and a half hours before kickoff; scan the official parking QR code or buy ahead when offered.
  • Reserved lots
Pass-controlled areas nearest the stadium generally open seven hours before kickoff. The color-coded lot name on a pass matters more than the street address, so download the current map before traveling.
  • Accessible parking and drop-off
Designated ADA inventory includes lower levels of Packard, Novus and Stadium structures and the Blue lot. A valid placard or plate is required. The fan drop-off point is near the south end of Packard Drive by Structure 7, with courtesy carts operating from two hours before kickoff until one hour after the game.

Public Transit

  • Valley Metro Rail
The Veterans Way/College Avenue station is just west of the stadium and is the simplest game-day arrival from downtown Phoenix, Mesa or an airport connection. Trains fill after games, so expect a queue.
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor connection
Ride the free PHX Sky Train from the terminals to the 44th Street/Washington light-rail station, then take an eastbound train to Veterans Way/College Avenue. It avoids parking entirely.
  • Tempe Streetcar
The streetcar serves downtown Tempe and stops at Marina Heights north of the stadium. It also connects with the Dorsey/Apache Boulevard park-and-ride and Valley Metro Rail.
  • Orbit neighborhood buses
Tempe’s free Orbit circulators link nearby neighborhoods, downtown and campus. Service generally runs until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 p.m. Sunday, so a late football finish may outlast it.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • Pregame drop-off
Use a destination outside the restricted stadium core—downtown Tempe, Novus Place or the edge of campus—and finish on foot. A short walk is faster than waiting for a driver to penetrate Veterans Way traffic.
  • Postgame strategy
Cross west toward Mill Avenue or south beyond University Drive before requesting a ride. The stadium, arena and light-rail zone is saturated immediately after the game.
  • Accessible arrival
The established fan drop-off area is near South Packard/Structure 7. Confirm the game-specific route with ASU in advance because police closures can affect the driver’s final turn.

Pregame Festivities

ASU offers both parking-lot tailgating and organized events within an easy walk of the gates. The standout for a neutral or visiting fan is the Dos Equis Pitchfork Pregame on the north side of Desert Financial Arena: it is free, open to the public and begins three hours before kickoff. From there, walk around the arena’s south side for the band concert and then east to Ellie Zeigler Way for the team arrival.

Tailgating

  • Parking-lot tailgates
Reserved lots close to the stadium open seven hours before kickoff; other event lots generally open five and a half hours before. Activities must fit within the assigned parking space, and saving spaces is prohibited.
  • Pitchfork Pregame
The free public event north of Desert Financial Arena opens three hours before kickoff with indoor and outdoor areas, televisions, children’s activities and value-priced pizza, hot dogs and beverages.
  • Coors Light Sun Devil Tailgate
This all-inclusive event in the Desert Arboretum is for Sun Devil Club members and other eligible VIP guests. It opens three hours before kickoff and emphasizes shade, cooling, music, food and drinks.
  • Grilling rules
Propane grills are allowed under current policy; charcoal and open flames are not. Grilling in structures is restricted to rooftop levels. Keep equipment and smoke clear of travel lanes.
  • Alcohol rules
Beer and wine are permitted for responsible adults in tailgate areas, but spirits, glass containers and kegs are prohibited. Drinking games are also barred.
  • Heat discipline
A canopy and water are essential, not optional. Alternate alcohol with water and use the public indoor component when temperatures are extreme.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • At 202 East University Drive, this tiny ASU institution has cooked burgers over mesquite since 1972. It is close, casual and still cash-only, so visit an ATM before joining the line.
  • The original location at 730 South Mill Avenue pours house beer and serves elevated pub food in a spacious indoor-patio setting. It is built for watching early games and sits within an easy walk of the stadium.
  • The Tempe location serves large, filling British-style pasties with dozens of traditional and inventive fillings. It is especially useful for a substantial pregame meal away from the loudest sports-bar crowd.
  • The original Eighth Street brewery occupies a historic creamery east of campus. The beer and pub menu make it a destination, but it is roughly a mile from the stadium and parking is limited.
  • A neighborhood pub in a historic house south of campus with a shaded patio, seafood and an old-Tempe feel. It is best for an unhurried start before walking north.

Gameday Traditions

  • Wear gold
ASU’s standing football instruction is gold unless a game is assigned a special theme such as a blackout, Maroon Monsoon or whiteout. Check the weekly announcement before choosing the shirt.
  • Sun Devil Walk
Approximately two and a half hours before kickoff, the team, Sparky, spirit squad and Pride of the Southwest travel Ellie Zeigler Way from Packard Drive to the southeast stadium entrance. Stand along the final stretch for the best energy.
  • Pregame band concert
One hour before kickoff, the Sun Devil Marching Band performs on the south side of Desert Financial Arena with Sparky and the spirit squad. It is free and leaves enough time to clear security.
  • “Forks Up”
Fans hold three fingers in the shape of ASU’s pitchfork and punctuate cheers with “Forks Up.” It is the easiest tradition for a first-time visitor to adopt immediately.
  • Pat Tillman entrance
The team emerges at the north end near Tillman’s statue, tying the stadium’s loudest entrance moment to its most meaningful memorial. Be in the bowl before the final countdown.
  • The Pride of the Southwest
ASU’s marching band, a 1991 Sudler Trophy recipient, sits in Section 18 and supplies the fight song, “Maroon and Gold,” throughout the game.
  • Territorial Cup week
The rivalry with Arizona is tied to a trophy first awarded in 1899, recognized as the oldest rivalry trophy in college football. The atmosphere and demand rise sharply when the Wildcats come to Tempe.

Monuments & Features

  • Pat Tillman statue
The bronze memorial near the north-end entrance honors the ASU and Arizona Cardinals standout who left the NFL to enlist in the U.S. Army and was killed in Afghanistan in 2004. It is the stadium’s essential pregame stop.
  • Frank Kush Field
The field has carried Kush’s name since 1996, recognizing the coach who won 176 games at ASU and built the program into a national force. His legacy also appears in a statue outside the venue.
  • The buttes
The stadium was constructed in the natural saddle between Tempe Butte and the smaller butte to the east. Rock walls and desert vegetation make the north end feel embedded in the landscape.
  • Open north-end views
The reconfigured bowl creates sightlines toward the buttes and Tempe Town Lake district. Walk the concourse before kickoff to see how tightly the venue fits its site.

History & Notable Moments

  • Opening game (1958)
Arizona State beat West Texas State 16–13 in the new stadium, beginning an era that would elevate both the program and its coach, Frank Kush.
  • Inaugural Fiesta Bowl (1971)
ASU defeated Florida State 45–38 in the first Fiesta Bowl, then a hometown showcase created after the undefeated Sun Devils were overlooked by established bowls.
  • Perfect season completed (1975)
A 17–14 Fiesta Bowl victory over Nebraska finished a 12–0 season and secured one of the strongest teams in school history.
  • No. 1 Nebraska upset (1996)
ASU blanked the two-time defending national champion Cornhuskers 19–0 in the first home game after the field was named for Frank Kush.
  • BCS record crowd (1999)
Tennessee’s national-title win over Florida State drew 80,470, the largest attendance in stadium history when temporary Fiesta Bowl seating expanded the building far beyond its present capacity.
  • Renovation completed (2018)
The multi-phase, approximately $307 million reconstruction replaced aging infrastructure, tightened the bowl and created the current premium clubs and concourses.
  • Big 12 arrival (2024)
Arizona State’s first Big 12 season culminated in a conference championship and College Football Playoff berth, restoring national relevance and injecting new energy into Tempe home dates.

Seating & Sections

The stadium is oriented north–south with sidelines on the east and west and the Inferno anchoring the south. The lower bowl feels steep and close; upper levels provide broader views of the desert campus. Shade is the decisive variable. The west side receives relief first, while the east side can remain in direct sun for much of an afternoon game. For any September kickoff, treat shade access as part of the ticket’s value.

  • West sideline
The best general choice for earlier shade and a traditional sideline view. Premium spaces here include the Coach’s, Legends’ and Founders’ clubs.
  • East sideline
Offers excellent sightlines and access to the San Tan Ford Club, but it is the punishing sun side. Do not choose solely on row and price for a daytime kickoff.
  • Inferno student section
The south-end student area is standing-heavy and loud, with the band in Section 18. Nearby seats provide atmosphere; visitors with small children may prefer the opposite half of the bowl.
  • North end
Close to the Pat Tillman entrance and scenic butte backdrop. End-zone angles are a tradeoff, but the setting and team entrance are exceptional.
  • North Field Boxes
New four-person boxes positioned on either side of the Tillman statue are marketed for the 2026 season with all-inclusive food and beverage through the Sun Angel Fund. Confirm exactly what a resale listing includes.
  • San Tan Ford Club
The east-side club provides an air-conditioned hospitality space, a major benefit in the heat, while retaining sideline seating access.
  • Accessible seating
The stadium offers hundreds of wheelchair and companion positions across price levels. Captioning appears on all three video boards, and a sensory room is available through the Hall of Fame lobby in the Carson Center.

Concessions

Mountain America Stadium is cashless. The renovated concourses provide standard stadium staples plus several recognizable Arizona brands, and alcohol sales end after the third quarter. On a hot day, buy water when passing an uncrowded stand rather than assuming the next line will be shorter.

  • Fork ’Em BBQ
A Sun Deck option for smoked-meat sandwiches and hearty barbecue fare. It is one of the more distinctive alternatives to a standard hot dog.
  • Someburros
The Arizona Mexican-food chain serves familiar burritos and related items, including a location behind Section 33. It is a practical local choice that travels well to a seat.
  • Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers
The local sports-bar brand brings burgers and beer to the Coca-Cola Sun Deck area.
  • Pitchfork Pregame values
Before entering, the public tailgate north of Desert Financial Arena advertises Venezia’s pizza and Bar-S hot dogs for $4, often a better-value meal than concourse food.
  • Beer and wine
Alcohol is sold to properly identified guests and service ends after the third quarter. Tailgate allowances do not override stadium rules once inside.
  • Hydration
Heat makes water the essential purchase. Bring an approved empty or sealed container only if the current permitted-items list allows it, and never depend on alcohol or soda for hydration.

Bag Policy

  • Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags and clear backpacks may not exceed 12 by 6 by 12 inches. A one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag is also permitted.
  • A small clutch may be no larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches, with or without a strap or handle.
  • Medical bags are allowed after thorough inspection. Diaper bags do not receive a general exception, so place childcare items in an approved clear bag unless a medical accommodation applies.
  • Solid backpacks, large purses, solid fanny packs, camera bags, oversized totes, diaper bags, binocular cases, mesh grocery bags and solid drawstring bags are prohibited.
  • Seat cushions, including models with backs, may be no wider than 18 inches and cannot have pockets, compartments or covers.
  • There is no bag-check facility. A rejected item must be returned to a vehicle or discarded, and reentry is not permitted after a ticket has been scanned and the guest exits.
  • Gates open 90 minutes before kickoff, and ASU recommends reaching security at least one hour before kickoff. Walk-through metal detectors are the primary screening method.
