A Guide to Milan Puskar Stadium

Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium becomes West Virginia’s weekly capital when 60,000 fans pour into Morgantown’s hills. The Blue Lot is a sprawling reunion, the Mountaineer touches a block of coal and the Pride of West Virginia forms the flying WV before kickoff. After a win, players and fans remain for “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a postgame tradition powerful enough to justify the trip by itself.

Getting to Milan Puskar Stadium

The stadium is at 1 Ira Errett Rodgers Drive between WVU’s Health Sciences campus, Ruby Memorial Hospital and Evansdale area. I-79 provides north–south access, I-68 approaches from Maryland and western Pennsylvania, and WV 705, US 119/Mileground Road, Van Voorhis Road, Patteson Drive and Monongahela Boulevard funnel the final mile. With hospital, fan and bus traffic sharing steep corridors, police direction overrides navigation apps.

Driving & Parking

  • From I-79
Exit 155 at Star City/WVU, cross the river and follow Monongahela Boulevard toward Patteson Drive. Expect long backups near the bridge on marquee dates.
  • From I-68
Exit 7 at Pierpont Road, follow US 119/Mileground to WV 705 and approach from the east. WVU often recommends this route after games because it avoids the Star City bottleneck.
  • Season permit lots
Blue, Light Blue, Green, Teal, Brown, Red, Silver and auxiliary lots require the corresponding color-coded pass. Lots open at 7 a.m. for Saturday games.
  • Single-game parking
Limited spaces in the Green Garage and designated Green or Brown ADA areas sell first-come on game day by credit card only. No tailgating is permitted inside the garage.
  • Free Coliseum parking
Cars may park free at the WVU Coliseum and elsewhere on Evansdale, but there is no stadium shuttle from the Coliseum. Expect a hilly walk or use the nearby PRT.
  • Accessible parking
Limited Brown and Green inventory pairs with complimentary shuttles beginning two and a half hours before kickoff. Blue Lot ADA parking is self-accommodating without shuttle service.
  • RV parking
Multiple colored lots admit reserved RVs beginning Friday; the Black Coliseum RV area sells first-come on arrival. Most RVs must leave by noon the next day.
  • Postgame priority
Primary outbound routes clear first while secondary roads are held. Follow Mileground/WV 705 toward I-68 if directed, even when it appears longer.

Public Transit

  • PRT
WVU’s automated Personal Rapid Transit operates continuously and free on game days. Health Sciences station is the closest stop to the stadium.
  • PRT stations
Walnut and Beechurst serve downtown, Engineering connects the academic campus, and Towers serves Evansdale housing. Lines grow quickly after the final whistle.
  • MountainLine bus
Stadium service runs from Mountaineer Mall beginning two hours before kickoff and for at least an hour afterward. Round-trip fare is $3; children age three and under ride free.
  • Drop-off
MountainLine uses the Ruby Memorial Hospital/Physicians Office Center area. Hospital construction and access controls can modify the precise pedestrian route.
  • Coliseum walk
Free parking at Hope Coliseum is useful, but the old dedicated shuttle is not operating. Use PRT from the Evansdale/Towers area or prepare for the grade.
  • Downtown hotels
Walking to Walnut or Beechurst PRT station is more practical than driving toward the stadium, particularly for visitors staying near High Street.

Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • Official point
WVU designates United Bank Suncrest, 990 Elmer Prince Drive, as the rideshare and taxi pickup/drop-off location.
  • Do not pin Ruby Memorial
Hospital access is restricted to staff, patients’ families and emergency traffic during home games. Drivers cannot use it as a casual meeting point.
  • Pregame walk
The Suncrest point sits outside the tightest permit core but still requires a walk. Allow time for hills and crossing directions from police.
  • Postgame pickup
Reach the bank before requesting and expect Elmer Prince Drive controls. A driver may be unable to approach until bus traffic clears.
  • Downtown alternative
Take the PRT to Walnut or Beechurst, then request from an open downtown street. This often avoids the highest stadium-zone congestion.

Pregame Festivities

Morgantown’s tailgate reputation is earned in the Blue and Light Blue lots, where multi-generation groups begin at 7 a.m. and the surrounding hills turn gold and blue. Visitors without a host can use Almost Heaven Village, the indoor Kids Zone and the Hall of Traditions before lining the Mountaineer Mantrip route two and a half hours before kickoff.

Tailgating

  • Blue Lot
The famous north-side expanse is the center of WVU tailgating. Permit holders choose spaces from 7 a.m. until four hours before kickoff, after which attendants tighten placement.
  • Almost Heaven Village
Between the Light Blue and Teal lots, this public fan zone opens three and a half hours before kickoff with music, vendors, food, drinks, games and sponsor activities.
  • Kids Zone
The Caperton Indoor Practice Facility hosts free inflatables, face painting and football activities from two and a half hours until 30 minutes before kickoff.
  • Mountaineer Mantrip
Two and a half hours before kickoff, the team starts at Don Nehlen and Med Center drives and walks to the northeast gate with band, cheerleaders and fans.
  • REVELxp tailgates
Turnkey tents outside the north gate provide reserved furniture, setup and optional catering for groups that do not hold a parking pass.
  • Canopy rules
Tents may not exceed 10 by 10 feet, must be secured and cannot rise before 7 a.m. The vehicle must occupy the adjacent permitted spot.
  • Fire and alcohol
Open fires, kegs, excessive alcohol and drinking games are prohibited. The permit holder is responsible for a tailgate capped at 20 people per spot.
  • Friday RV culture
Many motor homes arrive in their assigned colored lots the day before, extending game day into a full weekend. Entry hours differ by lot and pass.

Pregame Bars & Restaurants

  • Directly across from the stadium’s south side, this compact alumni-owned bar is covered in WVU memorabilia and fills extremely early.
  • Within walking distance on the Evansdale side, Kegler’s offers wings, beer, many televisions and more seating than the smallest campus bars.
  • Mountaineer Tap House
Near Evansdale and the stadium, the tap house combines dozens of craft taps, build-your-own burgers and balcony space.
  • The Richwood Avenue original is a Morgantown institution for cold beer, wings and handwritten notes covering the walls; other locations offer easier parking.
  • The Evansdale restaurant serves globally inspired burritos, vegetarian options and craft beer less than a mile from Hope Coliseum.
  • A longstanding neighborhood bar associated with Morgantown’s “table surfing” lore, Crockett’s delivers a more local, less polished experience.
  • Morgantown locations serve Pittsburgh-style sandwiches stacked with fries and coleslaw, plus pizza and beer for groups.

Gameday Traditions

  • Mountaineer Mantrip
The team’s walk represents miners traveling underground to begin a shift. Fans line the route from Don Nehlen Drive to the northeast entrance.
  • Coal touch
Each player touches a piece of coal from the Upper Big Branch mine before entering the locker room, honoring the state’s workers and 2010 disaster victims.
  • The Mountaineer
The buckskin-clad mascot carries a period-style rifle and fires it during approved pregame and scoring moments.
  • Pride of West Virginia
The marching band’s fast-moving pregame culminates in the outline of the state and the flying WV formation.
  • “Let’s Go Mountaineers”
One side shouts “Let’s Go” and the other answers “Mountaineers,” a simple call that gathers enormous force across two decks.
  • First Down Cheer
After a WVU first down, the crowd completes the announcer’s call and follows the band’s musical cue.
  • Hospital wave
After the Mantrip, fans and team members turn toward WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital and wave to patients watching from the upper floors.
  • Country Roads
After victories, players gather before the student section and sing John Denver’s state anthem with the entire stadium. Do not leave early when WVU is ahead.

Monuments & Features

  • Upper Big Branch coal block
The Mantrip’s centerpiece memorializes 29 miners killed in the 2010 explosion and links the team entrance to real state history.
  • Mountaineer Legends Park
The north approach honors defining players and coaches with displays that continue on concourse columns inside.
  • Mountaineer Field name
The playing surface retains the traditional name within Milan Puskar Stadium, producing the full official formulation.
  • Open end zones
Twin double-decked sidelines frame views toward the north and south, preserving an older college-stadium form despite added suites and terraces.
  • Milan Puskar Center
The north-end football building houses locker, meeting, training and administrative functions plus the public Hall of Traditions.
  • Hall of Traditions
Open three hours before kickoff until 30 minutes before, the museum presents trophies, uniforms and program history inside the Puskar Center.
  • 2025 FieldTurf
A newly installed synthetic surface replaced the older 2016 field while retaining Mountaineer Field’s visual identity.
  • Future West Tower
WVU plans a major west-side replacement after the 2026 season, but final construction routes and 2028 operations remain future work.

Seating & Sections

Mountaineer Field runs north–south, with WVU on the west sideline. The two large sideline decks are steep and generally unobstructed; lower rows bring proximity while upper-deck rows provide outstanding tactical views. Afternoon sun reaches the east side more directly, and late-season wind moves through the open ends.

  • West lower deck
Seats behind the Mountaineer bench carry the strongest traditional home atmosphere and receive shade from the press structure earlier.
  • East lower deck
The student-only east gate feeds the Mountaineer Maniacs, who stand and chant frequently. Nearby sections remain lively and sun-exposed.
  • Upper decks
The 200 level offers excellent full-field views, but long ramps or elevator waits and exposed weather require planning.
  • North end zone
Touchdown Terrace, north suites and the video board close much of this end while preserving views toward Legends Park and the Puskar Center.
  • South bowl
Sections 97–100 and 131–134 curve around the goal line. Section 133 is the alcohol- and profanity-free Family FunZone.
  • Diversified Energy Terrace
Assigned outdoor north-end seats include access to a climate-controlled club, buffet, cash bar, televisions and indoor restrooms.
  • Premium field boxes
Sixty-six semiprivate sideline boxes provide padded chairbacks, overhead heaters, television and in-seat food and beverage service.
  • Accessible seating
Platforms appear behind Sections 100 and 131 and along multiple concourses. Arrange tickets and the Brown/Green shuttle before game day.

Concessions

Milan Puskar Stadium’s stands and carts are cashless and accept major credit cards. Permanent points line both sideline concourses, with additional service in each end zone. Beer and wine are sold inside, while sealed plastic nonalcoholic drinks may be carried through security.

  • Pepperoni rolls
West Virginia’s signature portable food is the essential stadium choice. Fan First locations sell one for $3.50.
  • Fan First value menu
Stands 4, 11, 14, 18 and 26 offer $3 popcorn, $3 fountain drinks and the discounted pepperoni roll.
  • Sideline stands
East service clusters near Sections 105/106 and the 200-level portals; west locations sit near 125/126, 128/129 and corresponding upper sections.
  • Specialty carts
Six carts on each sideline supplement the permanent menu with rotating local or branded foods.
  • Beer and wine
Controlled sales occur at designated concourse points. Outside alcohol and hard containers are prohibited, and drinks cannot leave the stadium.
  • Sealed drinks
Water, soft drinks and other nonalcoholic beverages in unopened plastic containers are allowed; glass, metal cans, coolers and open vessels are not.
  • Premium service
Terrace Club tickets include a buffet, while field boxes receive in-seat food and drink service. Suite and club packages vary.
  • Allergy planning
Prepared food may contain major allergens. Contact concessions in advance rather than relying on a cart to prevent cross-contact.

Bag Policy

  • Each ticketed guest may bring one clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches.
  • A one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag is an approved alternative. One clear bag is allowed per person.
  • A small non-clear clutch no larger than 6 by 9 inches may accompany the clear bag, with or without a handle or strap.
  • Medical bags and equipment are permitted after inspection and tagging. Diapers and ordinary baby supplies must otherwise fit within an approved clear bag.
  • Backpacks, fanny packs, camera cases, cinch bags, luggage, large purses and non-approved seat cushions are prohibited.
  • Seat cushions and chairbacks must be 16 inches wide or less and cannot contain pockets, zippers, compartments or covers.
  • Sealed plastic containers of water, soft drinks and other nonalcoholic beverages are permitted. Coolers, glass, metal cans, outside alcohol and open containers are prohibited.
  • Gates open 90 minutes before kickoff and use walkthrough detectors; suite gates open two hours before. Stadium re-entry is not permitted.
